Monitoring the potassium ion concentration in drilling fluid is crucial for water-based mud systems that utilize potassium for shale inhibition. This concentration tends to deplete as it is adsorbed onto shales, so it is important to monitor and maintain effective inhibition levels in the mud system. In order to determine the potassium ion concentration, excess Sodium Perchlorate is added to a measured mud filtrate volume to precipitate out Potassium Perchlorate. The precipitate is then centrifuged, and the volume of the compacted precipitate is converted to potassium ion concentration using a calibration curve. It is necessary to prepare this calibration curve using the test reagents at the rig site. To measure the potassium ion concentration, specific equipment is required. This includes a standard Sodium Perchlorate solution, which is added to the mud filtrate to precipitate the potassium ion. The concentration of potassium chloride (KCl) in the mud filtrate is then calculated using conversion factors and a calibration curve. These factors include the KCI concentration (ppb) = (7 / Filtrate Volume (ml)) x KCI Concentration from Calibration curve equation. Additionally, there are conversion factors for reporting KCl concentrations in different units, such as KCl (gm/l) = KCl (ppb) x 2.85714 and KCl (% Vol) = KCl (ppb) ÷ 3.5.
