Is an expansion of global hydrogen supply chains on the horizon? It's been reported in HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS Worldwide today that a collaboration between CB&I and Shell, with support from DNV, has led to the Approval in Principle (AiP) of a large-scale, liquid hydrogen cargo containment system. As much larger quantities of hydrogen can be transported, this should reduce the cost of transport per unit of energy. #drybulk #tankers

According to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, a total of 68 alternative fueled vessels were commissioned during Q1 of 2024, a growth of over 50% when compared to the first three months of 2023. Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director at DNV, said: “As seen by the exponential year-on-year growth for new orders in the first quarter of the year, the alternative-fueled fleet is expanding at a rapid pace.” The AFI information also revealed that five new orders for alternative fueled vessels were placed last month. Of the five ships ordered, two were for methanol-powered ships, two for ammonia fueled vessels, and one that will run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). DNV: May newbuild orders demonstrate ‘increasing appetite’ for methanol-fueled vessels Methanol continued to be the biggest driver, accounting for 23 of a total of 33 new orders for alternative fueled vessels in May. Latest figures from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform in May saw a total of 33 new orders for alternative fueled vessels were registered. According to the classification society, methanol continued to be the biggest driver, accounting for 23 of these vessels. Ten of these are from the container segment, along with five bulk carriers, and four car carriers. LNG continued to lag behind methanol, with eight new orders registered in May, while two new orders for ammonia fueled vessels reinforce the burgeoning momentum already shown for this fuel in the earlier months of the year. “These figures further bolster the trend of steady growth in the ordering of alternative fueled vessels in 2024,” DNV said. So far this year, a total of 127 new orders for alternative fueled vessels have been placed, representing growth of 55% compared to the first five months of 2023. https://bit.ly/45aSics #methanol #efuel #energy #energytransition #futurefuel #cleanfuel #alternativefuel #marine #maritime

Methanol-Fueled Vessels Surge as Demand for Alternative Fuels Grows The demand for alternative fueled vessels is showing substantial growth. In May 2024 alone, 33 new orders for alternative-fueled vessels were placed, with methanol-fueled vessels leading the pack, accounting for 23 of the total orders, according to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform. The majority of these orders are for the container segment, followed by bulk carriers and car carriers. LNG-fueled vessels continue to trail behind methanol, with eight new orders registered in the same period. The month also saw two new orders for ammonia-fueled vessels, a promising sign of the rising interest in the fuel. The data supports the trend of steady growth in the ordering of alternative fueled vessels in 2024. To date, a total of 127 new orders have been placed, representing a significant 55% increase compared to the first five months of 2023. “The momentum in the new order market towards alternative fueled vessels is strong,” said Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director at DNV Maritime. Methanol has been the standout, with 70 new orders placed in 2024, which accounts for 55% of all new orders for alternative fueled vessels this year. “While this is still far behind LNG in overall terms, these latest figures demonstrate a clearly increasing appetite from the market for methanol-fueled vessels,” he said. Two new orders have also been placed for ammonia fueled vessels, bringing the total this year to 11, compared to just two for the whole of 2023. “While still clearly in its early stages, this provides further evidence of the emergence of ammonia on the alternative fueled market,” said Stefanatos. https://bit.ly/3X8FXUr #methanol #efuel #energy #energytransition #futurefuel #cleanfuel #alternativefuel #marine #maritime

There is no better fuel for decarbonizing the marine sector today than green methanol. Ammonia and hydrogen fuels require technical and production feasibility issues to be resolved. Korea's leading shipbuilders cannot afford to produce and launch another ship until 2027. Methanol ships have already begun construction or are completed and beginning to appear at sea. In addition, methanol has many other advantages as a marine fuel. Crucially, methanol has the advantage of quickly dissolving and biodegrading and not causing marine pollution. Lots of interest in green methanol for clean oceans!
