Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed a groundbreaking porous organic polymer that significantly extends the lifespan of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Traditionally, ZIBs last only a few thousand cycles, but this new technology allows them to endure several hundred thousand cycles. This innovation addresses key issues such as "zinc dendrites" and undesirable side reactions that have hindered ZIB adoption. The polymer, a crystalline 2D porous fluorinated covalent organic framework (TpBD-2F), acts as a protective layer on the ZIB anode, creating nanochannels that facilitate zinc ion flow while repelling water molecules. This breakthrough enhances battery lifespan, stability, and efficiency. The research team has developed a prototype button cell and envisions scalable applications for larger energy storage solutions, which are crucial for renewable energy integration. We are thrilled to share our comprehensive review published in the Journal of Energy Storage (Elsevier) 𝗜𝗙-𝟴.𝟵 titled: "Covalent Organic Framework Nanocomposites for Superior Lithium-Ion Storage: Bridging Molecular Design and Battery Technology." 🔗 DOI: https://lnkd.in/d6fa8ukV # Key Insights and Highlights • COFs are emerging as potential energy storage materials due to their adjustable porosity, high surface area, and structural flexibility. • Advances in producing and integrating COF-based nanocomposites for LIB applications are being explored. • Strategies for integrating COFs into nanocomposite structures include in situ growth, physical mixing, and surface modification. • Different manufacturing methods for COF-based nanocomposites are examined, including solvothermal, mechanochemical, and co-condensation procedures. • The electrochemical performance of these materials has increased, with increases in specific capacity, rate capability, cycle stability, and electrochemical impedance compared to traditional LIB materials. • Future research areas include improving COF structures, increasing conductivity, and creating scalable synthesis processes.

SHOWCASE • 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐘: 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 🌍 What if we could apply the precision of living cells to the chemical industry? Project CLASSY, a FET Open Research and Innovation Action (RIA) joined together leading scientists with expertise in systems chemistry, biocatalysis and microfluidics to take ambitious steps to create a microfluidic platform that mimics the natural efficiency of cells. This could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of chemical processes. In collaboration with the other partners of the project we developed a set of innovative microreactors that can house multiple catalysts and enzymes, similar to the way living cells produce complex molecules. I am excited to share our recent publication in @Nature Catalysis Nature Portfolio. We demonstrate how 1,3-butadiene can be formed with high selectivities from the electrocatalytic valorization of acetylene. 1,3-butadiene, a key component in synthetic rubber, is usually obtained as a side product from the energy-intensive thermocatalytic cracking of naphtha. This process is not environmentally sustainable. In this work, we showed that copper catalysts, after a simple modification by iodide anions, are efficacious for converting acetylene to 1,3-butadiene with high selectivities. Extensive characterization of the catalyst using in situ spectroscopies and computational simulations using density functional theory reveal that stable ensembles of neutral and partially oxidized Cu sites are promoted using iodide. These ensembles were found to enhance the C-C coupling of acetylene to 1,3-butadiene. This paper lays the foundation for the sustainable production of multicarbon molecules. We hope this will spur the development of catalysts to couple acetylene to even longer-chain hydrocarbons, which can potentially be used as aviation fuel. This study explores the potential of microwave-assisted synthesis for producing carbon-based nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and carbon dots, from biobased and waste resources. This method aligns with green chemistry principles, offering a sustainable, energy-efficient approach with high yield and precise control over material properties. Carbon-based nanomaterials show promise for water treatment applications due to their high surface area, adsorption capacities, and ability to remove pollutants, including heavy metals, dyes, and organic contaminants. Despite its advantages, challenges remain in scaling the technology for industrial use and ensuring the reusability of nanomaterials.
