As a profession grounded in evidence-based practice, landscape architecture relies on collecting scientific evidence to inform design decisions and demonstrate performance in the pursuit of sustainable development. The Landscape Architecture Foundation's Case Study Investigation Program fosters connections between education, practice, and post-construction evaluation, enabling researchers, designers, users, and investors to gain insights into the challenges and limitations of design concepts in real-world construction. Over the past few months, as part of the Horizon Program GreeNest, we have been conducting ongoing laboratory research on earthen building techniques, with a special focus on Light-Clay. Now, continuing our exploration of sustainable building materials, we are excited to invite you to open lectures in Athens, where we will discuss broad applications of nature-based materials in contemporary architecture. 🌍🏗️ The lectures will feature: Researchers from Technische Universität Berlin and from ZRS Architekten Ingenieure, presenting their extensive expertise on nature-based materials in architecture from the German perspective. Piliko, together with professors and researchers from National Technical University of Athens, introducing the GreeNest project program and showcasing Light-Clay techniques applied in modern Greek architectural projects. Join us as we explore how traditional methods inspire innovative, sustainable solutions for contemporary architectural design. 📅 Register via the link below, and find the official invitation attached. We look forward to connecting with you and exchanging ideas on natural building techniques and sustainable architecture! https://lnkd.in/dzaYvpjY #architecture #sustainability #earthenmaterials

Do architects find that local plans and legislations are getting in the way of their work? 🏗 The Danish magazine Byggeri + Arkitektur has just published an article about how Danish architects, in particular, experience resistance from local plans and legislation compared to architects in the rest of the Nordic countries when it comes to lightweight external wall constructions. The article is based on the results of our latest survey and takes a closer look at why so many Danish architects feel resistance from legislation. World Architecture Day! 🏢🏨🏬🏤 Today we salute our Architects who continue to shape our nation one project at a time! World Architecture Day (WAD), is celebrated annually on the first Monday of October. This day coincides with the United Nations World Habitat Day, aligning the architectural community’s efforts with global urban development goals. The theme of World Architecture Day 2024 is “Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design” emphasizing the role of young architects in urban planning and development. The International Union of Architects (UIA), encourages young architects to engage in participatory processes, contributing fresh perspectives essential for sustainable development. Particular emphasis is placed on fostering resilient urban economies where cities drive growth and recovery through innovative and sustainable practices. Key areas of focus for this year’s WAD include energy efficiency, waste management, use of sustainable materials and promotion of sustainable mobility. These efforts aim to create environmentally friendly cities that reduce dependence on external resources. Young architects can also enhance citizen participation in decision-making, involve communities in the design process and promote the appropriation and care of public spaces. #udecott #WorldArchitectureDay #architecture #architects #urbandevelopment #trinidadandtobago

As we navigate the challenges of land scarcity and burgeoning population densities, the concept of vertical place-making and vertical community-making becomes not just an option but a necessity. This requires a blend of safety and innovation. I wrote an opinion piece for Parametric Architecture on this topic with examples of Asian metropolises. FACES is pleased to announce the arrival of its #84th issue, whose theme centers on Lightness in Architecture, and the companion to our previous issue that had been dedicated on Heaviness. Today, in the face of environmental constraints, the notion of lightness has taken on many dimensions that broaden the architect’s responsibility: building lighter means using fewer materials and resources, generating less waste, taking less time to assemble, occupying less space, and requiring less energy. This issue adresses these complex questions, from a double critical perspective - both historical and practice-orientated -, as well as the implication of the reality that there is no such thing as an environmentally friendly material per se. How can we actively shape a more resilient land use in planning, architecture and construction in the direction of sustainable practices and conduct? The ground we stand on is all we have. Throughout history, it has provided us with everything, as the foundation of civilization. In our latest article, we try to lay an ear to the ground, listening to the knowledge that grows from the soil that feeds us. Cultivable soil is a scarce resource, at the intersecting point of many interests. Through interviews with 5 experts in and around the building sector this article will focus on the underrepresented voice of our land use in architecture and planning in the Nordic context. “If we do not act now, I think we will have a much harder time to transform. We need to get our politicians to understand that either we engage in incremental adaptation, or we will have to deal with a transitional chock in the future.” – Anders Larsson, researcher and teacher at the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management, SLU Alnarp This article is part of the Nordic Sustainable Construction program, an initiative by the The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council and Nordic Innovation. Our goal? To lead the Nordic region towards sustainable and competitive construction while minimizing environmental impacts. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dQDhAqn4 Contributing experts: Ulrika Stenkula, Marta Bohlmark, Anders Larsson, Kristiina Lång, Thomas Hahn, Katrina Wiberg Written by Malin Zimm, with research by Angelica Åkerman – Pernille Martiny Modvig, Dorte Bo Bojesen, Helle Redder Momsen, Anders Vestergaard Jensen #SustainableArchitecture #GreenTransition #NordicInnovation #SustainabilityLeadership #ReductionRoadmap

World Architecture Day 2024 highlights urban issues, promotes the construction of more sustainable and equitable cities for everyone. Every year on the first Monday of October, World Architecture Day emphasises architecture's strategic impact in creating our surroundings. Organised by the International Union of Architects (UIA), since 1986, the congress aims to stimulate dialogue on architectural innovation and the accompanying demands faced by today's architects. The theme for this year is “Empowering the Next Generation to Participate in Urban Design,” which calls to embrace urban design that will benefit generations to come. It emphasises the contributions of young architects in creating sustainable, inclusive cities that meet the diverse needs of today's society. #MadamArchitect #WorldArchitectureDay #2024

As urban populations soar, the responsibility of architects goes far beyond creating structures—it’s about shaping environments that resonate with cultural, climatic, and human needs. In cities where 68% of the global population will reside by 2050, architecture must adapt to the complexity of urban life. In this conversation, Kourosh Salehi sheds light on the importance of integrating cultural context and climate-conscious design into urban narratives. He believes that by embracing the human condition and the nuances of each site, we can offer solutions that are not only functional but also deeply meaningful and relevant to the communities they serve. Architecture must be more than a response to physical constraints—it should be a proactive tool for addressing the challenges facing our cities today.
