A sample of health research initiatives being funded by the Health Research Council. It shows how funding is diverted away from useful remedies, like cancer drugs, and into quack remedies based on racial preference; • $650k for Hapai te hauora: Breathing your ancestors into life, captures the breadth & connections of a generation – rangatahi Māori–a generation moving forward together •$400k for access of traditional Maori healing for cancer care services •$380k for Kaupapa Māori music theories and practices as a pathway to accelerating Māori well-being •$150k for interviews with Pacific men, Pacific heath promoters and Pacific barbers will inform the development of a Pacific health promoting behaviour change framework and intervention programme in a barbershop setting owned by a Pacific health provider •$150k to redesign hospital waiting rooms away from “a legacy founded in colonialism and are designed to Eurocentric principles of health and well-being“ •$400k to research traditional Māori lunar calendar system guided by the goddess Hine te Iwaiwa, into the context of pregnancy care for wāhine Māori and Maori Midwives.” •$650k to fund build on her expertise in kappa Māori research and enable her to pursue a development and capacity building plan to grow both her expertise and that of emerging researchers. I thought the Tohunga Suppression Act 1907, supported by Maori leaders, was introduced to ban this kind of dodgy practice. It seems they have re-emerged.

The physiology of menopause and perimenopause has been understudied. However, wearable device leader ŌURA and period tracker startup Clue are now teaming up with academic researchers to change that. This gap in research isn’t limited to women entering menopause. Until the 1980s, women of reproductive age were largely excluded from clinical research. Hormonal fluctuations were seen as confounding factors, and the assumption was made that the male body could serve as a general model for all people. Now, researchers are working to fill the knowledge gaps we've inherited. I’m a big fan of democratising research, and I’m thrilled to see that women’s health is finally being taken seriously. Many founders are focusing on this critical area. A few notable ones include Susanne Feldt with Hermaid, a virtual women's clinic providing access to medical advice on hormone imbalances, especially for women going through menopause; Samina Usman, founder of Femilog® , Menopause Health Tracker; Prof. Sharron Hinchliff, companies like Midi Health; Elektra Health and many more. Closing 2024, I'm pleased to share that my latest research paper has been published in the Jurnal Keperawatan Padjadjaran. 📄 Title: The Unmet Needs of Palliative Care among Patients with Non-Malignant Chronic Illness in Indonesia: A Phenomenology Study 🔍 Abstract: This study explores the experiences and needs of patients diagnosed with non-malignant chronic illnesses in Indonesia. Through semi-structured interviews, we identified six major themes that highlight the challenges these patients face, including negative emotions, ignorance of the disease process, helplessness during treatment, feelings of being a burden, limited access to care, and the role of family and faith as sources of motivation. Our findings emphasize the need for broader and deeper palliative care assessments for non-malignant chronic illness patients. 👥 Authors: Rona Cahyantari Merduaty, Tuti Nuraini, Sihwastuti Sihwastuti 📚 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/ghEJ8zj6 This research is very close to my heart as it addresses the often-overlooked needs of patients with non-malignant chronic illnesses. This research also marks the beginning of my career as academia. Working on this project has been a deeply rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the support of my co-authors and everyone involved. I hope our findings will contribute to better palliative care practices and improve the quality of life for many. Thank you for taking the time to read about our work. Let's continue to work towards improving palliative care for all patients. #Research #PalliativeCare #ChronicIllness #Nursing #Publication

🚨 N E W R E S E A R C H 🚨 A small-scale study just out of China shows promising results in the use of an anti-malaria drug (a herbal extract called artemisinin) in reducing testosterone production in the ovary While this is an incredibly exciting development, we must advise on cautious optimism and patience. The study is very small, only 19 patients over 12 weeks, so a larger scale study (or studies plural!) over a longer period of time need to be done before these findings could be adopted. ❓Why does this study matter❓ As you know only too well, treatment and management of PCOS is currently on a symptom by symptom basis and there is no licenced medicine to treat the underlying cause. Quoted in The Guardian, Professor Qi-qun Tang, research lead from Fudan University in Shangai said, “Based on our findings, artemisinins are promising candidates for treating PCOS because they strongly inhibit ovarian androgen synthesis, reduce immature follicles, and improve the [menstrual] cycle.” 🔍 Future Research Needed 🔎 🔬Long-Term Health Risks: Understanding any potential long-term side effects. 🔬Fertility and Pregnancy: Investigating effects on fertility and pregnancy (on both mother and baby) 🔬Effect beyond restoring menstrual cycle: Does it improve androgen related symptoms, insulin resistance, quality of life etc 👩🏻💻 Would you like a webinar on this research? 👩🏾💻 We might host a webinar with experts to answer all your questions about this groundbreaking research, to find out what conclusions - if any - we can already draw, how soon might this lead to a PCOS medicine, what other research it might lead too etc. Is this of interest? Comment Yes below if you’re interested. What do you think? Are you excited? Sceptical? We would love your thoughts on this new research, drop comments below ⬇️ Scientific Paper https://lnkd.in/etbWrwqJ Guardian Article https://lnkd.in/gZRsAs_K #pcos #research #pcosresearch #breakthrough #pcoswebinar #malaria #artemisinin #hormoneimbalance

This morning at the ADLabs Pop-Up we had a great time learning how Ovulio Corp. uses AI to determine ovulation status with co-founders Dr. Serhii Zatsarynin, PhD and Kateryna Andreeva 👏 Some key takeaways 👇 1️⃣ This is the beginning days of AI in fertility technology. Ovul uses AI to detect changes in saliva to find ovulation days 🔍 2️⃣ As estrogen levels increase, a "ferning" or crystallization pattern forms in dried saliva. Ovul has trained AI models to detect this pattern using their device! 3️⃣ This technology can be used outside of fertility tracking, to catch changes in estrogen levels when entering perimenopause and menopause. Stay tuned for the full interview soon 🧬 🪩 🤍 Visit Ovul to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gEkGZ9dR
