Seven classification societies give nod to HHI’s methanol engine The HD Hyundai Heavy Industries – Engine & Machinery (HD HHI-EMD) announced that it has completed the development of methanol dual fuel HiMSEN H22CDF-LM engine. According to the company, HD HHI-EMD has successfully completed the Type Approval Test (TAT) of the methanol dual fuel HiMSEN engine (model name: H22CDF-LM) at their Techno center, 19 to 22 March, with seven classification member including KR (Korea), ABS (USA), BV (France), DNV (Norway), NK (Japan), LR (UK), RINA (Italy). The engine that selectively uses diesel and methanol can produce 1,440 ~ 2,160kW output and the engine is greatly improved the effectiveness of installation & management, engine efficiency compared to its existing engine with the e-HBU (electro-Hydraulic Boosting Unit) that is independently developed methanol boosting unit. HD HHI-EMD expects to expand its market into various vessel types through this TAT such as feeder container, tanker, and bulk carriers. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Develops Eco-Friendly Ammonia Duel-Fuel Engine ◾ HD Hyundai Heavy Industries aims to lead the eco-friendly shipbuilding market with the development of a zero-carbon ammonia dual-fuel (DF) engine. This is the first ammonia engine in the world, applied with a high-pressure ammonia direct injection method. ◾ HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that it had completed the model-based class approval testing for the "HiMSEN Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engine," (model: H22CDF-LA) at its Engine Technology Center in the Ulsan Headquarters. ◾ HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shared that it will soon start commercialization of the HiMSEN ammonia engine as the detailed examination and compliance review has been finalized with the model-based class approval. ◾ The ammonia engine developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is suitable not only for ammonia carriers, but also for marine power generation and propulsion purposes. The company also plans to supply the engine to land-based power generation markets. ◾ Until now, ammonia engines were based on a “low-pressure premixed combustion method” which burns a mixture of ammonia and air, which has been provided to the engine combustion chamber, through compression. The newly developed “high-pressure direct injection method” compresses air in the engine combustion chamber and then burns it by injecting ammonia with high pressure. ◾ Despite its benefits of having great output and fuel efficiency, along with the mitigation of greenhouse gases such as nitrogen dioxide (N2O), engine companies around the world had difficulty developing this method due to its high technological complexity. ◾ While setting up an optimized fuel spraying time and period to maximize burning rate, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also utilized the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to minimize the amount of nitrogen oxide and unburned ammonia. In addition, the Integrated Scrubber developed independently by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, has been widely applied resulting in a drastic reduction of ammonia concentrations. ◾ “The development of this ammonia engine has great meaning as it will be an opportunity for us to lead the market while providing an expanded eco-friendly duel-duel engine lineup,” said an official of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Ammonia-propelled ships currently being developed by global shipbuilders are attracting attention as eco-friendly ships with no carbon emissions. However, how to safely eliminate the toxicity risk of ammonia, a fuel, is a key issue in ship development. At this forum, attended by global companies such as Euronav, THENAMARIS, NYK Line, who attended the International Tech Forum, HD KSOE introduced the Integrated Amonia Scrubber technology developed with its own technology. The integrated ammonia scrubber is a next-generation eco-friendly technology that can absorb emitted ammonia twice and reduce emissions to zero. The initial ME-LGIA engines will have 5% SPOC. “Fuel oil mode”: • MAN B&W target identical performance as a conventionally fueled Diesel engine. This #oligomerisation step includes a 3-reactor-in-series configuration for testing #heterogeneous #catalysts for the oligomerisation of a mix of #olefins from the 1st stage #MTO - #methanol to olefins unit. The unit is fully #automated and includes all online #gasphase #analytics to quantify all gas-phase hydrocarbons as well as O2 and COx from #coke burnoff. These in combination with weighed product vessels provides a closed #massbalance.
