A recent breach of U.S. telecommunications companies has been described recently as the “worst telecom hack in our nation’s history – by far,” by the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Mark Warner. This alarming statement comes in the wake of a massive cyber espionage campaign allegedly linked to China, which has compromised multiple telecommunications networks across the United States. The breach, first reported earlier this month, involved China-linked hackers intercepting sensitive surveillance data intended for American law enforcement agencies. According to a joint statement by the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on November 13, the hackers infiltrated networks of several telecom companies, stealing U.S. customer call records and communications from individuals primarily involved in government or political activities. Following up on its September report, the Wall Street Journal further disclosed that the #cyberattack tied to the Chinese government penetrated the networks of a swath of U.S. broadband providers. The additional disclosure identifies that the adversaries could potentially be accessing information from systems used by the federal government for court-authorized network wiretapping requests. Citing people familiar with the matter, the newspaper identified that Verizon Communications, Inc., AT&T, and Lumen Technologies are among the telecom companies whose networks were breached by the recently discovered intrusion. Commenting on the latest disclosures, John Terrill, CISO of Phosphorus Cybersecurity Inc. Cybersecurity wrote in an emailed statement that targeting U.S. surveillance capabilities is both surprising but also expected given their tremendous value. “Traditional hacking techniques wouldn’t allow you to deploy a payload capable of doing the type of surveillance and traffic collection our ISPs can do. In fact, our #telecommunications companies had to invent new hardware and software for this explicit purpose as existing systems couldn’t handle it.” He added, “Whether it’s backdoors in software, cryptography, or the creation of surveillance infrastructure, the idea that we can create these capabilities and sufficiently protect them is at odds with history,” https://lnkd.in/gR5kanVC

A new CrowdStrike report has detailed adversarial attacks by #LIMINALPANDA hackers highlighting China’s ongoing #cyberthreats to the #telecom sector. Active since at least 2020, LIMINAL PANDA has targeted telecom companies with custom tools for stealthy access, command and control, and data theft. The group shows deep expertise in telecom networks, including provider interconnections. They have exploited compromised telecom servers to launch attacks on additional providers across different regions, and are highly likely engaged in targeted intrusion activity to support intelligence collection. Also on Tuesday, Adam Meyers, senior vice president of Counter Adversary Operations at CrowdStrike, testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law regarding Chinese cyber threats to critical infrastructure. During his testimony, Meyers publicly disclosed, for the first time, information about a China-linked state-sponsored actor known as LIMINAL PANDA, which is actively monitored by CrowdStrike’s Counter Adversary Operations. CrowdStrike’s announcement coincides with a Wall Street Journal report revealing that T-Mobile’s network was one of the systems compromised in a significant Chinese #cyberespionage operation. This operation infiltrated multiple U.S. and international #telecommunications companies, according to sources familiar with the situation. Tom Wheeler, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Visiting Fellow for Governance Studies at The Brookings Institution’s Center for Technology Innovation identified in an article that the FCC’s minimal #cybersecurity reporting obligations are constrained to cyber incidents that lead to outages, with no reporting requirements for compromises to confidentiality or #network integrity. “Amazingly, through its detailed reporting requirements on #cyber issues, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has more information on cyber shortfalls than the regulator charged with protecting America’s networks,” he added. #CriticalInfrastructure #threatlandscape #Cyberthreats #Cyberattacks https://lnkd.in/gzEPxzs3

Where Can We Hide Now? Given the role of our internet service providers (ISPs), a gatekeepers of our digital lives. What happens when their infrastructure is compromised? Suddenly, everything that relies on internet communication—whether it’s accessing Google, VPN connections, or even vendor software updates—becomes vulnerable. An attacker with access to an ISP gains a prime Man-in-the-Middle position, allowing them to: - Infect systems by corrupting software patches - Spy on sensitive communications - Cause targeted service disruptions - Set the stage for large-scale cyberattacks From espionage to chaos, the possibilities are endless when the backbone of the internet is at risk. So, where do we hide now? SPIalert enhances your cybersecurity strategy by integrating physical security measures, giving your team the ability to extend security controls with continuous, multifactor verification. It ensures that the individual accessing your corporate assets—whether in person or remotely—is consistently verified, anchoring trust of their digital identity on physical persona.
