The world was interconnected in ways that were once thought impossible. Autonomous vehicles glided seamlessly through the skyways of megacities, and artificial intelligence had become an integral part of daily life, enhancing human capabilities and providing solutions to the world's most pressing problems. Amidst this backdrop, a young scientist named Aria made a groundbreaking discovery. She developed a machine that could generate clean energy from the quantum fluctuations of the vacuum, a limitless source that could power the world indefinitely. This invention promised to usher in a new era of prosperity and peace. However, Aria's invention also caught the attention of the Global Federation, a powerful conglomerate that controlled the world's energy resources. They saw Aria's machine as a threat to their dominion and sought to claim it for themselves. Aria knew the potential of her invention. It could free humanity from the shackles of finite resources and provide a brighter future for all. With the help of an underground network of scientists and thinkers, she embarked on a mission to share her technology with the world. The story followed Aria's journey as she navigated the challenges of a society on the brink of transformation. It was a tale of hope, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit's quest for a better tomorrow. As the sun set on a world standing at the crossroads of time, Aria's voice echoed through the airwaves, "This is not the end, nor is it the beginning. It is the dawn of a new horizon, and together, we will step into the light." And so, the future unfolded, not with certainty, but with the promise of human ingenuity and the endless possibilities that lay just beyond the horizon.

The MIT Mobility Initiative is delighted to announce the seventh episode of the MIT Mobility Forum Spring 2024 hosted by Prof. Jinhua Zhao. Forum Title: Co-Design of Complex Systems: From Autonomy to Future Mobility When designing complex systems, we need to consider multiple trade-offs at various abstraction levels and scales, and choices of single components need to be studied jointly. For instance, the design of future mobility solutions (e.g., autonomous vehicles, micromobility) and the design of the mobility systems they enable are closely coupled. Indeed, knowledge about the intended service of novel mobility solutions would impact their design and deployment process, while insights about their technological development could significantly affect transportation management policies. Optimally co-designing sociotechnical systems is a complex task for at least two reasons. On one hand, the co-design of interconnected systems (e.g., large networks of cyber-physical systems) involves the simultaneous choice of components arising from heterogeneous natures (e.g., hardware vs. software parts) and fields, while satisfying systemic constraints and accounting for multiple objectives. On the other hand, components are connected via collaborative and conflicting interactions between different stakeholders (e.g., within an intermodal mobility system). In this talk, we will present a framework to co-design complex systems, leveraging a monotone theory of co-design and tools from game theory. The framework will be instantiated in the task of designing future mobility systems, all the way from the policies that a city can design, to the autonomy of vehicles as part of an autonomous mobility-on-demand service. Through various case studies, we will show how the proposed approaches allow one to efficiently answer heterogeneous questions, unifying different modeling techniques and promoting interdisciplinarity, modularity, and compositionality. Among the highlights are: Cyber cab : A fully autonomous taxi without a steering wheel or pedals, designed to revolutionize transportation with an estimated cost of just $0.20 per mile. Mass production is expected to start by 2026. Robo van : A large, electric, autonomous vehicle designed to transport up to 20 people or goods. It features a retro-futuristic design and aims to improve transportation in high-density areas. SpaceX Rocket Reusability : SpaceX demonstrated a successful rocket landing using a giant metal arm, showcasing advancements in reusable space technology. Neuralink Telepathy : Musk's brain-science startup, Neuralink, announced the first human implant of their brain-computer interface device called Telepathy. The presentation gave an extensive overview of the challenges and opportunities of the Europe’s #automotive #industry, particularly the need for Europe to maintain its competitive edge against rising global players like China and the US. It is crucial to integrate innovative mobility solutions into existing infrastructure and energy systems, highlighting the balance between growth and #sustainability. The conversation also covered the evolution of the automotive landscape, moving from domain-centric to multi-domain approaches, and the critical role of AI and cyber-physical systems in shaping future mobility solutions, especially in the context of #autonomousdriving. Furthermore, in the presentation, Reiner John provided an overview of ECSEL/KDT/Chips Joint Undertaking projects, demonstrating their evolution over the past 15 years.
