How to incentivize the production of green fuels for the shipping sector? Together with the European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA), Transport & Environment (T&E) organized a discussion at the European Parliament, hosted by Vera Tax and Maria Spyraki MEP ⛵ A general agreement that the scarce and expensive e-fuels need to go to the hard-to-abate sectors of shipping & aviation. ⛵ FuelEU Maritime will create demand for such fuels, but the supply side does not have binding requirements. Common mandatory supply targets should be set up by the Member states through national implementation of Renewable Energy Directive. ⛵ It is important that ETS funds, both collected by the EU and the Member states are channelled back to the shipping industry, e.g. through the Innovation Fund. ⛵ While the Innovation Fund already allows for shipping companies and green fuels producers to apply, a dedicated maritime envelope is necessary.

"Access to clean maritime fuels is a top priority for the #decarbonisation of the #shipping sector. The recently published Draghi report on the Future of European Competitiveness identifies shipping as one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise, requiring around 40 billion in annual investments between 2031 and 2050. The report highlights that, while the EU is a world leader in #sustainable renewable and low-carbon fuels for the decarbonisation of #transport, it has limited installed capacity and planned production. The EU needs to start building a supply chain for clean fuels, or the costs of meeting its targets will be significant." 👉 Read the news article here: https://lnkd.in/dwRJWSNt #ECGNews #maritime

Green Shipping represents an innovative strategy to reshape the maritime industry towards more responsible practices. The shipping industry is taking significant strides toward decreasing its environmental impact by prioritizing fuel efficiency, adopting renewable energy sources, and embracing innovative technologies. In line with the global trend above, Wilhelmsen as one of the major Ship Management Company has set an ambition to shape the maritime industry’s transition towards net-zero emissions and capitalize on green growth. In practice, we focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, biodiversity and ecosystems, circular economy, and green growth and decarbonization. In supporting the WSM ambition above, we must not be ready only in terms of hardware (green ship/equipment via new building or retrofit) but most importantly, to ensure the brain of operation which is our technical workforces are adequately trained and ready for the changes & challenges. Therefore, we kick off the initiative by organizing a training course run by DNV on Alternate (Green) Fuels for Ship covering LNG, Methanol, Ammonia, Hydrogen & Wind Power.
