IMPACT FUNDS - Climate funds are facing unexpected turbulence. Despite a 6% rise in global assets for mutual funds and ETFs with a climate mandate, outflows are set to hit nearly $24 billion in 2024, marking a potential first-ever annual redemption. As the consequences of climate change become more tangible and costly, the question arises: is this a risk or an opportunity for investors? Hortense Bioy, CFA, head of sustainable investing research at Morningstar Sustainalytics, notes that concerns over greenwashing, high interest rates, and regulatory uncertainty have all contributed to the shift. Yet, some investors are still doubling down on companies offering innovative climate solutions. The demand for clean energy investments remains high, with a staggering $4.5 trillion needed annually by 2030 to meet net zero goals. An ESG deep dive! Private markets have enormous potential to drive positive change, but alignment of LP and GP priorities is the first step. Read both sides of the conversation in our latest report.

It is reasonable to look at the constellation of ESG-related funds globally and conclude that risk and exclusion are primary filters as opposed to tangible criteria of making society better for people and planet. But it would also be fair to say the more impact-driven investments - which frankly we need a whole lot more of - are still largely niche, higher risk, in private markets and are not yet within reach of average investors. The market is still very much in the early days of the ESG to impact transition, and the fundamentals of risk pricing - e.g., physical climate risk as just one - are needed to build this evolving market for more capital, and, yes more investors. #ESG #impact #returns

Today at #COP29, the focus is on Finance, Investment, and Trade—a crucial opportunity to redefine the role of private finance in supporting a just climate transition and the sustainable development goals. Financial institutions have a key role to play, not only by mobilising resources but by actively guiding the real economy towards sustainability through responsible capital allocation and effective risk management. To drive real impact, a global norm for sustainable finance must be set. Clear standards provide the accountability and certainty financial institutions need to support economies most affected by climate change. This means a decisive move to channel funds into emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), where financial support can drive climate resilience and adaptation. The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) at COP29 offers Member States a chance to collectively agree on an ambitious climate finance goal that reflects the needs of the most vulnerable. By setting global expectations, pathways are opened up for private capital to flow more readily towards sustainable development in the regions that need it most. WBA, in collaboration with asset owners and managers, are actively working on addressing this issue. Through our Investing Sustainably in Emerging Markets Initiative we are encouraging the alignment of sustainability-related policies and investment strategies to ensure they support rather than hinder sustainable growth in EMDEs.
