Thinking out LOUD: Competitive Job Market: Merit vs. Proximity In today’s competitive job market, relying on proximity to key decision-makers to secure the perfect opportunity can be tempting. However, prioritizing connections over meritocracy and innovation can negatively affect individuals and organisations. By valuing skills and potential over connections, we can create a more dynamic and competitive environment that rewards excellence and drives sustainable growth. Let’s champion transparent hiring practices and equitable opportunities to build highly effective and diverse teams. Together, we can foster environments where talent is recognized, irrespective of proximity to power. Let's commit to this approach and drive sustainable business and economic growth. #Meritocracy #HiringPractices #WorkplaceDiversity #CareerGrowth #Innovation #VivaAfrica #Kenya

Reflecting on my career journey, I’ve been fortunate to wear many hats, from finance and program management to empowering women through education and building bridges for job seekers. It’s this diversity of experiences that’s taught me the power of connecting people to opportunities. Whether it was during my time at the Khartoum American School, Practical Action, or in my current role at Women’s Wings, one thing has stayed constant: the fulfillment I find in helping others succeed. In a world where networking often feels transactional, I’ve come to believe that genuine relationships are the key to long-term success. It’s not just about jobs, it’s about building trust and helping others grow in ways they didn’t know were possible. To all my connections: how has a meaningful connection helped shape your career? Let’s continue to lift each other up💯 #Leadership #ProjectManagement #CareerGrowth #Networking #Opportunities #WomenEmpowerment

One of the most common narratives about Africa? The idea of a “talent gap” or “talent shortage.” This only tells part of the story. The truth is, talent in Africa is abundant—you just need to know where to find it. As executive search professionals deeply rooted in Africa, we have firsthand experience of the challenges of finding the right fit for leadership roles. Often, it’s the less obvious sources and unconventional approaches that yield the best results. In the absence of a search partner, we recommend tapping into referral networks, speaking with industry experts, and uncovering the events, conferences, and networking opportunities that candidates frequent. Africa holds deep reserves of talent, especially at the senior executive level. The key is knowing how and where to search.

--- 🌟 **The Power of Recommendation and Trust** 🌟 In February 2022, I had the privilege of connecting with a dynamic leader presiding over a Nigerian group in the diaspora. He was on the hunt for someone to launch and manage his business back in Nigeria. After engaging several candidates and reaching certain milestones, he realized it was time to broaden his search, spanning from the US to Canada—where we eventually crossed paths. Was this the end of his search? Yes. Were his concerns put to rest? Not quite. Was he open to collaborating with another Nigerian? Absolutely, though with a degree of skepticism. During our initial conversation, I quickly sensed his reservations, doubts, and mistrust. I made a deliberate choice to decline the offer, explaining my position. While we shared similar technical qualifications, our areas of expertise differed. I encouraged him to shift his perception: "Remember, you are compensating me for my time to deliver results. Together, we will evaluate those results—not based on your timeline but on our mutual goals. I have reached a point in my career where I can choose where to invest my skills." Fast forward two months of consistently delivering results, and I was honored to be introduced to the Nigerian group he leads. My collaboration extended to working with a talented colleague in Seoul for eCommerce application development. Although they wanted to retain my services for future phases, I recognized that those endeavors weren't the right fit for me. I strongly advocate for companies and organizations to explore “Innovation and New Markets” roles. In a rapidly evolving global economy, embracing these avenues can create unparalleled competitive advantages. Let us not underestimate the value of trust, adaptability, and collaboration in our professional journeys. Together, we can pave the way for innovative success! 🚀 #Leadership #Innovation #Collaboration #GlobalBusiness #Trust ---

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining Sultan Afzal, Co-Founder and CEO of ETRA Talent, in a thought-provoking discussion with our Recruitment Entrepreneur Founders on the global shifts shaping the business and recruitment landscape. With the Middle East, APAC, and the United States rapidly emerging as key financial hubs, it's imperative for businesses and professionals alike to adapt their strategies to harness these opportunities. We are witnessing a rise in international relocations, highlighting the need for companies and candidates to think outside the box when navigating these dynamic markets. Whether you’re considering expanding your business footprint or exploring new career horizons, staying ahead of market trends and understanding regional nuances is more critical than ever. At ETRA Talent, they’ve established a robust global network over the last decade, enabling them to provide invaluable support across Europe and the Middle East. With a deep understanding of regulatory landscapes, cultural intricacies, and access to exceptional talent, they are well-equipped to guide you through your global expansion journey. If your organisation is considering obtaining a licence abroad, building a leadership team, or making strategic hires, I encourage you to reach out to Sultan or Parvyez Salam for a confidential conversation. Opportunities are out there—now is the time to make your move! #GlobalExpansion #TalentAcquisition #BusinessGrowth #Leadership #RecruitmentInsights

When you run your company with a "my way or the highway" approach: Employees may leave abruptly, exposing your company’s secrets and leaving unfinished work. Talented staff will leave, and you’ll be left with lower-quality work. Your company’s reputation will suffer, making it hard to attract top talent. You’ll lose trust in everyone, rewarding the wrong people, and listening to yes-men. Financial losses will pile up until you realize the problem—possibly too late. Some companies in Egypt still operate this way, leading to consistent failures. #LeadershipMatters #CompanyCulture #RetainTalent

As a leader of a growing business, one of the most critical skills you need is the ability to identify, hire, and lead great people. It's not about having the best ideas; it's about executing them well, and that depends on the quality of your team. That's why up to 70% of your time should be spent on finding and hiring the best people in your industry. But don't expect to find them on job boards. Great people are often already employed and need to be headhunted. There’s 3 key skills to identify great people: 1. They’re self-starters - they don’t need motivating because they take pride in their work. 2. They roll with a team - great leaders always have a core group of followers who go with them wherever they go. 3. They’re never out of a job unless it’s out of choice. Remember: The success of your business depends on the quality of your people. Picture: Islamabad, Pakistan, 5:32PM, 11/4/2024.
