Medallion Architecture, featuring its Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers, provides a structured approach to data organization, transformation, and consumption. It highlights incremental improvement, flexibility, and governance, creating a solid foundation for advanced analytics and machine learning. While Medallion Architecture is a design pattern for data organization, it is not a specific data model. It is not dimensional, data vault, or relational. Instead, a system built with Medallion Architecture can incorporate files/tables designed with any of these modeling principles. This architecture is versatile and can be integrated into various data management ecosystems, including data warehouses, data lakes, and lake houses. 🌟Medallion Architecture In Simple Terms 🌟 Medallion architecture is a game-changer in the world of data analysis. It helps businesses transform raw, unstructured data into refined insights that can be used to make informed decisions and understand customers better. In simpler terms, medallion architecture takes messy data, cleans it up, and turns it into something valuable that businesses can use to make decisions. The architecture consists of three layers: 🥉Bronze, 🥈Silver, and 🥇Gold. · 🥉Bronze Layer (Raw Data): Here, we gather data from different sources without changing its original form. · 🥈 Silver Layer (Cleansed and Conformed Data): Now, we clean and organize the raw data. We make sure all the data fits together and is easy to understand. This layer helps us do things like analyze trends or make predictions. · 🥇 Gold Layer (Curated Business-Level Tables): Finally, we make the data useful for specific projects or tasks. This layer is where we create reports, analyze customer behavior, or make business decisions based on the data. #bigdata #dataanalysis #dataengineer #medallion #data

Intentional light meetings on Fridays gives me time to explore new approaches for our customers. I came across an interesting concept.... multi platform medallion architecture. Meaning, bronze, silver, and gold in Databricks, and introducing another layer platinum on a different platform such as OneLake or Fabric. This approach goes even further with data quality checks and validation giving business users additional trust through more certified curated data. We have seen emerging patterns with very advanced customers who are exploring a platinum layer for internal data products or an internal marketplace. This gives highly sophisticated data teams a way to deliver a certified business purpose aggregation layer to publish data products to internal consumers. Realistically this is at best aspirational and art of possible for most data teams. Prerequisites IMHO would be: 1) existing medallion architecture, optimized with pipelines and CI/CD 2) implemented effective governance for discoverability and compliance, catalog implemented such as Unity Catalog, Collibra, Purview 3) already running an effective modern data mesh/data product architecture with n domains 4) organizational-wide support and ownership to know you are running centralized or decentralized data domains owned by different LOBs / hub and spoke for the long haul.. the next 3+ years 5) self service data processes active for awhile (6-12 months) producing value across the organization 6) cost optimized and way to measure cost and value of data domains and different layers Ideally another layer isnt needed and a self service internal catalog lets data product organizations publish products to consumers giving trust in what is being consumed. Ticking all of the boxes on the above list is hard. >80% of enterprises can maybe say they do 1 or 2 from the above list. It takes ownership and direction at the CDO/CIO level and a lot of sharp experienced builders. Clearly defined priorities, data roles, and great partners to help get it done. It is fun to see new emerging patterns to know what is possible and help our customers execute different approaches to deliver value in their enterprise. I cherish my light Fridays to be able to learn and explore whats next.

Medallion Architecture in Data Engineering In today’s data-driven world, companies are generating tons of data. But how do we make sense of it all? This is where Medallion Architecture comes into play – a way to keep your data organized, clean, and ready for insights. Think of it like a series of filters: Bronze Layer: This is where all the raw, unprocessed data lands. It’s messy, but we keep it all just in case we need it later. Silver Layer: Here, we clean up the data – remove duplicates, correct errors, and make sure everything is consistent. Now, it's usable! Gold Layer: This is where the magic happens! Data from the silver layer is shaped into the perfect form for analytics and reporting – ready for business insights! The goal is simple: move data from chaos to clarity, making sure we extract valuable insights in the process. Medallion Architecture ensures data is always accurate, reliable, and easy to use at every stage. In short: Bronze = Raw, Silver = Clean, Gold = Insights! #DataEngineering #MedallionArchitecture #DataAnalytics #BigData #ETL
