On World Heart Day we are reminded how predominant cardiovascular disease is worldwide and how large the impact is in terms of death and disability. There is no one-size-fits-all plan for comprehensive cardiovascular care around the world. There are too many factors involved. What works for one region may not be appropriate in another. And so, it is very fitting that World Heart Federation is calling for participants in this year’s World Heart Day campaign to demand leaders around the world prioritise heart health – however that may look where they live.#medicaleducation #cardiovascularhealth #worldheartday2024

When I was a cardiac nurse, it always seemed like more women than men were admitted after Christmas. Often, these women had been experiencing cardiac symptoms for days and even weeks. Women tend to put off seeking treatment, because we so often put ourselves last on the priority list - and there is no bigger time for everyone else's priorities than the holidays. In what is often the busiest month of the year, here are some things to remember.🎄 Heart attack symptoms in women often differ from men, and can include: - Chest pain or discomfort, which may feel like pressure, tightness, or aching - Shortness of breath, especially when accompanied by fatigue or chest pain - Pain or deep aching in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or upper stomach - Nausea or vomiting - Sweating excessively without a typical cause - Unusual fatigue or weakness - Lightheadedness or dizziness - Indigestion or heartburn NOTE: Women are more likely to have subtle or "silent" symptoms that can be easily overlooked, and can include additional symptoms like fatigue, sleep disturbances, and stomach problems weeks before a heart attack occurs. These symptoms can come and go, but generally worsen and become more prolonged. Whatever you do, don’t downplay your symptoms or apologize! During a recent workshop, Carolyn Thomas, author, founder of MyHeartSisters.org and heart attack survivor, shared how the perfect triad of denial, putting herself last, and embarrassment put her in a life-threatening situation. Watch our enlightening interview with her below. ❤️A request: please share widely! Here's a testimonial from one of our dear subscribers after reading the above in our recent newsletter: “I can't thank you enough. I now realize that I have been exhibiting some of these “silent” heart symptoms, and will seek help immediately."
