To my friends in New England, I strongly encourage you to attend this event (the Boston Cyber Security Summit, Tuesday, October 29 at the Sheraton Hotel).
-- Why? --
In today’s interconnected world, the topic couldn’t be more relevant. With rising tensions over the South China Sea, ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, and Russia and North Korea working together, the cyber threats to our nation and allies has never been higher.
Every day, we face adversaries who are actively planning and executing attacks on our country’s IT infrastructure. These threats aren’t entirely about virus detection, nor can they be fixed by a 'one-and-done’ patch or update; they're complex operations, often executed after months or even years of careful planning and maneuvering. These cyberattacks are carried out by professional teams backed by rogue nations, seeking to infiltrate vulnerable systems and back-door their way into otherwise secure corporate and national IT assets.
-- Recent Events Have Real-World Implications in IT --
I can all but guarantee you that Putin and Kim Jung Un spoke in the last week about upping their hacking efforts in the West, after Ukraine destroyed a train load of N. Korean ammunition two weeks ago, along with two Russian ammunition depots. Both of these states maintain professional teams with the singular goal of disrupting our economy, causing chaos, and stealing funds.
With these two teams now working together they will have merged their efforts to collectively exploit compromised infrastructure. Think of it this way, like two complex Chess boards, that were once played independently of each other, are now merged, allowing the two bad actors to exploit their collection of compromised pieces. Maybe a better way analogy would’ve been two kids with two separate boxes of Legos merging them into one box? (Please feel free to let me know in the comments which analogy you believe works better.)
The takeaway I'm encouraging here is that these events, happening far away from our homes, have a direct impact on our daily lives given our reliance on IT.
This event, and many others like it, will highlight the growing importance of cybersecurity and the proactive steps we can all take to protect our nation from these ongoing threats. Your participation matters!
Boston Cyber Security Summit October 29th! Who's going!? 🤔
Cyber security remains the top concern within organizations today, (as it should be). With tensions rising in the Western Pacific in the South China Sea, and hot wars going on in Europe and the Middle East, our collective cyber security needs to be continuously monitored and kept up-to-date.
I wish I were closer to home in late October, this is a must-attend event for business leaders and IT professionals.
