Why should you hire a licensed Professional Land Surveyor when needed boundary lines established or marked? We have seen and heard stories from across the country, and right here in Idaho, of unlicensed individuals establishing and/or marking property boundary lines and marketing themselves as surveyors. Idaho State Statute defines the roles and responsibilities of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Idaho. State Statute also defines what is considered a boundary survey. If the individual is unlicensed by the state but claiming to be a surveyor (or being able to provide the same services as a surveyor), they are not the same. Licensed Professional Land Surveyors in Idaho are responsible to protect the safety, health and welfare of the public. They are qualified and licensed through education, experience and competency required by state statute to perform a boundary survey as defined in Idaho Code. "Locating, relocating, establishing, reestablishing, or retracing property lines or boundaries of any tract of land..." must be completed by a licensed Professional Land Surveyor. Our role as licensed surveyors is to locate the evidence of the boundary and make a determination as to where the correct location is based on boundary determination principles. This is why it’s so important to hire a land surveyor prior to construction as it removes the guesswork and assumptions. What may be true for the other corners may not be true for this one. Don’t get me wrong, we work with some great ranchland fence builders and when they are unsure, they default to calling us. In some cases, landowners can be so adamant that they know exactly where all their corners are. They want to save money, I get it, but as we all know, more often than not, it proves to not be the case. (We love serving our customers, but this is a reality for us all. Learning to navigate these conversations is a skill learned over time. End of the day, surveyors report the facts no matter how difficult it may be upon delivery.)
