Its ok to get a little extra support to get through the holidays. Some people get overwhelmed, and take their stress out on others. Other people fall into old family patterns of playing out childhood traumas on each other instead of enjoying each others company. Or perhaps, grief arises due to people no longer celebrating with the family any longer. Whatever it is, confidential counseling can help people make the holidays a happier experience. As we kick off Mental Health Week; it is great to start with therapist self care. In a vocation where symptoms of burnout, compassion fatigue and emotional exhaustion are the tax for 'caring professionals', let's talk about the silent and unregulated exploitation in the sector. According to the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists; the average client activity should be 20 per week; with a minimum requirement of 1.5 hours of clinical supervision per month. Hmm......🤔 In the current economical climate where the cost of living seems to be the excuse for rates and prices to be on the increase all over the place; can seeing 4 clients per day be enough? Who regulates the profession; other than the occasional random audit call from the scattering of Professional Bodies? Are employers aware of this? If this is the case, why are supervisees reporting during clinical supervision, that their places of work are expecting that at LEAST 5 clients are seen per day (groups are also included as a single session in this reflection, too)? Before we can start to look at the themes emerging from Mental Health Week, can please we make a conscious effort to ensure our therapists' are doing ok? ⁉️Are they being exploited by some of the online therapy platforms out there? ⁉️Are they making sure that taking breaks is part of the work? ⁉️Are they moving their bodies enough? ⁉️Do they have an adequate support network? ⁉️Have they become isolated outside of work? ⁉️Are they experiencing emotional exhaustion? ⁉️Have they stopped to book essential health appointments, such as dental, general physical examination, smear tests, following up specialist appointments, sessions with a personal trainer? Random, yet essential! ⁉️Are they accessing their own personal therapy? Are YOU a therapist or from the 'caring' professions reading this and feeling guilty? If this is you, you can start implementing those changes today. No shame, No shade. You're in the right place. The Therawake Directory is expanding due to these growing concerns around therapists' needing appropriate spaces to be able to access therapeutic support and clinical supervision from a diverse catalogue of accredited professionals. Come on in. #mentalhealthweek #helpforthehelper #therapistwellbeing
