It is very exciting to see the Chemistry Nobel Prize awarded to a non-chemist who, nonetheless, has made a significant impact on the field. Moreover, I believe that using AI to model different aspects of our world could have a profound impact on other fields as well. Take economics, for example: wouldn’t it be exciting to have a model that forecasts the outcomes of various policies? Surely there are many challenges in how such a model could be trained, but having an accurate enough model could completely transform how parliaments, governments, and their agencies operate. Right now, we simply trust in their wisdom and honesty after they are elected or appointed, but they would need to explain themselves if their policies resulted in undesired model outcomes. If such a model gained sufficient public trust, it would drastically reduce the number of populists in politics and, of course, win a Nobel Prize for its creators.
