Reflecting on EduTech Asia 2024, one of the most striking themes was the transformative potential of AI in reshaping the educational landscape. This year’s conference showcased an impressive array of advancements in AI-driven tools and platforms that cater to both teachers and students, demonstrating how technology is pushing the boundaries of traditional learning models. The conference sparked a vital dialogue around the ethical considerations of AI in education. As powerful as AI is, its application must be carefully balanced with considerations for privacy, bias, and the safeguarding of student data. EduTech Asia 2024 emphasized the need for transparent AI systems that educators and students can trust, an essential factor if we are to integrate AI sustainably into our schools. CEMCA on AI at the Asia-Pacific Meeting on Education Recently, at the 6th Asia-Pacific Meeting on Education 2030 (#APMED6) held in Bangkok, Thailand, Dr B Shadrach, Director of the Commonwealth of Learning's (COL) regional centre, the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA), participated in a discussion on AI where he highlighted CEMCA’s efforts in advancing AI literacy. These initiatives are: • AI Literacy for Informal Sector Workers – conducted in collaboration with the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) • AI Literacy Among Teachers – in partnership with MIT-RAISE • COL’s Teachers in the Loop AI project – piloted among in-service teachers These initiatives aim to build AI capacity in education and foster responsible use of AI technologies. The APMED 6 meeting, organised by UNESCO’s Regional Office in Bangkok, reviewed progress since the 2022 Bangkok Statement and discussed innovative approaches for making education more relevant, inclusive, and sustainable. Ghana successfully hosted its first-ever National AI in Education Workshop, bringing together educators from across the country to explore innovative approaches to teaching. This two-day workshop introduced participants to the co-creative mentoring model and the practical use of cutting-edge AI tools, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Canva, for designing lesson plans, notes, summaries, and visualizations. The Executive Director of CENDLOS, Nana Gyamfi Adwabour, encouraged participants to apply their newly acquired skills to enhance their work as educators, fostering more engaging and inclusive learning environments.
