#California’s pilot project to convert entire neighborhoods from gas to electricity offers valuable insights for Canada’s #energy transition. 🏡⚡ The SB 1221 bill, currently before the California state legislature, proposes 30 ‘zonal decarbonization’ projects to reduce #electrification costs by eliminating the need for expensive #gas pipeline upgrades. This approach aims to align gas utilities’ investments with state mandates to cut fossil gas use and avoid burdening customers with rising bills. Canadian Climate Institute / Institut climatique du Canada’s recent analysis echoes the need for strategic planning to avoid costly stranded assets as demand for gas declines. It was an honor to be interviewed by the ENCA 404 Channel during the 4th National Demand Side Management Indaba, which was organized by the National Energy Crisis Committee Workstream 5 - Demand Management. The DSM Indaba will be hosted by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality together with NECOM in support of the Energy Action Plan which is aimed at addressing the immediate electricity supply shortfall and ending loadshedding. BAGE is one of the over 200 stakeholders call for a European geothermal strategy and action plan to be prioritised by the European Commission in a common position under the aegis of EGEC, based on six pillars: 1/. Target of 250 GWs of geothermal energy by 2040 in electricity; #heating and #cooling #districtheating and #coolingsystems #networkedgeothermal and standalone #geothermal heat pumps; for use in public, residential and commercial buildings; agriculture; electricity generation, transport and manufacturing sectors; 2/. Harmonisation and development of new support schemes including cross-border financial risk guarantees; 3/. Endorsement of the Geothermal Industrial Alliance; 4/. Accessibility of energy demand and geological data; 5/. Skilling workers, municipal network planners and permitting agencies; 6/. Strengthening innovation and leadership of our domestic manufacturing industry.

A £2 billion funding package has been awarded to build a proposed new subsea and underground 196km cable between #Scotland and the north of #England which will help boost energy security, cut bills and hit Government green targets. Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) is a high voltage electricity superhighway able to transport 2GW of homegrown wind generated electricity between Torness, East Lothian and Hawthorn Pit, County Durham. The project will reduce Great Britain's reliance on volatile international gas markets by further harnessing the power of homegrown North Sea wind.
