Definitely not a desirable tag we would like to aim for. With over 10 million tonnes of plastic waste, India leads the pack of countries generating plastic waste. Recent research shows that over 57 million tonnes plastic waste was created worldwide. While government is putting all the possible efforts to address the issue at various levels and have taken decisive actions, it is imperative that we as the society be more aware of this grave issue and bring desirable changes in our lifestyle. Green Tourism 🏝 was one of the key priority areas identified by India during its G20 🇮🇳 Presidency, to further achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Today on #EarthDay2024, we celebrate our remarkable planet! 🌎 ☀️ Under this year’s theme ‘Planet vs. Plastics’, we are emphasising our unwavering commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health. Source segregation of solid waste plays a decisive role in this. Over a span of almost three years, the public-private partnership project ‘Alag Karo’ has been working with communities in the Indian cities of Delhi and Gurugram on source segregation of waste, diversion of waste from landfills and capacitating waste collectors and citizens on better solid waste management practices. “Source segregation of waste also showed me how much plastic waste I produce,” stated one of the residents from the project site, underlining the impact of the project activities on her way of thinking, which has led to a behavioural change. Watch the short video below to get more exciting insights into the work of Alag Karo! In the next couple of weeks, we will present further practical experiences based on case studies and impact reports from the project. Here's how I demonstrate environmental responsibility in my daily life. #GreenerTogether #LinkedInNewsIndia Demonstrating environmental responsibility in daily life is vital, especially in India, where environmental challenges like pollution, deforestation, and waste management are pressing. Here’s how you can fulfill this responsibility: 1. Reduce Waste: Minimize the use of single-use plastics by carrying reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Opt for products with minimal or biodegradable packaging. Compost your kitchen waste to reduce the burden on landfills. 2. Conserve Water: Fix leaks, install water-saving fixtures, and use water judiciously. Collect rainwater and recycle greywater for gardening or cleaning purposes. 3. Adopt Sustainable Transportation: Use public transport, carpool, cycle, or walk whenever possible. Switch to electric vehicles or CNG-powered vehicles to reduce carbon emissions. 4. Energy Efficiency: Use energy-efficient appliances and switch to renewable energy sources like solar panels. Turn off lights, fans, and appliances when not in use. Embrace natural light and ventilation to reduce energy consumption. 5. Tree Plantation: Participate in tree-planting drives or grow plants at home to improve air quality and contribute to biodiversity. 6. Support Local and Organic: Buy locally produced goods and organic food to reduce your carbon footprint and support sustainable farming practices. 7. Spread Awareness: Educate family and friends about eco-friendly practices. Encourage children to respect and preserve nature through small daily actions. 8. Advocate for Change: Support environmental policies and organizations. Volunteer for clean-up drives and initiatives promoting sustainability. By embracing these practices, you can lead by example and inspire others to contribute to a cleaner, greener India.🇮🇳 #sandipchowdhry Go green

India: The World's Largest Plastic Polluter India has emerged as the largest contributor to global plastic pollution, emitting a staggering 9.3 million tons annually, which accounts for nearly 20% of the global plastic waste. This alarming statistic is highlighted in a study published in the Nature journal, shedding light on the growing plastic crisis. Key points: 🌱 Official waste generation rates in India may be underestimated. 🌱 Rural areas, uncollected plastic waste, and the informal recycling sector are often left out of data collection. 🌱 India now faces a significant challenge in plastic management, with waste burning in open areas being a major issue. Countries like China have made significant investments in waste management infrastructure, dropping from the top position to fourth, showing that change is possible. As nations come together to develop a legally binding agreement by 2024 to reduce plastic emissions and greenhouse gases, India must take urgent steps to improve waste collection and recycling infrastructure. ♻ Let's work towards a cleaner, greener future for India and the planet. ♻ #PlasticPollution #GreenPlanet #Sustainability #India #Recycling #EnvironmentalResponsibility

🥁 The superpower title goes to... *drumbeat* India! 🙋 Super waste-producing nations are often the superpowers in the world. Here's what I heard from Indian business associates from Singapore returning to India are noticing warmer weather, even in traditionally cooler regions. Thick thermal clothes are being swapped for simple outerwear. This certainly implies warming on a big scale. 📑 Recent research has identified five key contributors to India’s plastic crisis: 1. India ranks top, emitting 9.3 million tonnes annually. 2. Uncollected waste accounts for 68% of all plastic pollution. 3. Open burning causes 57% of global pollution. 4. 1.2 billion people lack waste collection services. 5. Targeted actions can dramatically reduce the crisis. 🗑️ Our plastic waste is difficult to isolate due to its wide usage across many industries including household garbage, where food is often found in plastics. ♻️ The littering process, especially from uncollected waste, is the largest contributor to the problem. The easiest way to remove this unsightly waste from our landscape is to burn them. It's sheer common sense to do this, yet the carbon and toxic fumes are certainly entering our lungs and atmosphere causing erratic weather patterns like extreme turbulence for aircraft. 🐘 Next, imagine 8.7 million African grey elephants scattered across India’s landscapes—equivalent to the weight of 52 million tonnes of plastic waste entering the environment yearly. 🏭 Also, the sheer magnitude would make all countries sit up because global warming of the air and waters have no boundaries, yet the only way to arrest this is to have proper waste management systems within the specific territories. It's common sense that a good solution will need to be deployed where it is most needed. 🏞️ India’s uncollected waste emissions alone dwarf those of Nigeria, which ranks second but emits 2.7 times less plastic into the environment. The impact is visible in ecosystems, rivers, and even mountain peaks. 👋 Within India, only 81% of waste is collected, which gives us a great deal of concern. ❓ Should we deploy solutions to where it is needed most? Our land may be divided, but our atmosphere and waters are shared. Where and how do we gain the most improvement? The answer is clear. #Sustainability #PlasticPollution #India #WasteManagement #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalImpact I am Mar Vin Foo 🌿, a specialized consultant in energy, both upstream and downstream with a focus on AI. In a year that is slated to witness the signing of a legally binding global treaty to end plastic pollution, it may be fitting if efforts are undertaken to conduct more detailed, pan-India research of the impact microplastics can pose to the health of the Indian people. Nothing better exemplifies the urgency of focused research – whose findings could speed up the process of finding solutions to reduce exposure to microplastics – than the fact that the issue at stake is the health and well being of over 1.4 billion Indian citizens who make up almost 18 percent of the global population. And there could be no better occasion to seriously start working on this than Earth Day 2024, being observed on April 22, with “Planet vs Plastics” as its chosen theme. #India #plastic #microplastic #plasticwaste #plasticpollution #EarthDay #EarthDay2024 #planetvsplastic #health #research
