I see a lot of companies where the founders try and hire people that are not "as good" at them in a variety of areas. In these cases, the founders want to be the "smartest" in the room. I think the approach is wrong. Hire the best people that are better than you at everything you need to build/scale. Your job as a founder is to assemble the best team and replace yourself in functions constantly- not be the authority on every subject. #Fura

Necessity vs Opportunity. Is MedTech behind when it comes to hiring? As an industry that is so advanced when it comes to innovation & technology, some of our approaches to hiring are very dated. The best example of this, is our desire to always hire from competitors and the overweighted value placed on therapeutic expertise. Now, let me say straight away, I absolutely acknowledge there are times where this is very advantageous and I’d go as far as to say there are examples where is an absolute necessity. That being said, there are absolutely opportunities for us to think outside the box and to consider true impact players from other sectors. Let’s reconsider our priorities when it comes to hiring. For starters, consider our formula of IQ (intellectual), EQ (emotional) & CQ (change) with more importance than just considering whether they’ve worked for a competitor. One of the biggest advantages you’ll find is an increase in cognitive diversity which is essential for any high performing team. At this stage, I’m not even talking about hiring outside of MedTech. (Although with the rise of AI & automation, there are further opportunities being presented) all I am saying, is let’s be more open minded when it comes to direct therapeutic experience, when the opportunity allows. I’ve seen great examples of COO’s and Site Directors transitioning from one therapeutic area to another and leveraging their manufacturing knowledge and best practices from other sectors to significantly improve processes. Not to mention Supply Chain executives that have dealt with a market crisis take their experience & expertise to revolutionise companies end to end supply chain and play a pivotal part in successful transformation.
