Innovation meets healthcare 💡     Using #drones to transport medicines to remote locations, guaranteeing citizens an essential service even in areas that are difficult to reach. This is the objective of the U-ELCOME DSD Project, presented yesterday at Fucino Space Centre (L'Aquila, Italy) , which sees Telespazio involved as drone operator and technological partner.   Telespazio will provide the project with innovations developed in the field of #unmanned #aircraft and of #satellite navigation and communication services. The Company will manage the entire drone delivery service, from the planning and execution of the flight to the request for authorisation, through the proprietary #TDROMES platform, which will act as the system’s true cloud control centre, also contributing significantly to the optimisation and simplification of routes.   The project is part of the wider U-space European COMmon dEpLoyment (U-ELCOME) project, which in turn is part of the European SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking Digital Sky Demonstrators initiative, coordinated by the Eurocontrol Innovation Hub and involving 51 partners in Italy, Spain and France. https://lnkd.in/dq94RgDr

"US operators AT&T, T-Mobile & Verizon conducted independent cross-carrier interoperable API tests in NorthAmerica focused on drone public safety connectivity, as part of GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative. GSMA stated the three operators worked with developers at drone maker Inspired Flight Technologies (IFT) for the project and Verizon also used its membership with technology foundation MITRE Engenuity to test a device status API. Once the API is commercially deployed, connected devices such as drones, can maintain connectivity mid-flight. This means a drone can be re-contacted if issues occur. Adam Bilmes, senior director of business development at IFT explained the ability to access network information via an API enables better drone flight support and management. Companies will be able to “pinpoint where to send relief immediately after weather events and/or to fly over communications, and other assets to expedite recovery efforts”, he added. Announced a year ago, Open Gateway is designed to help businesses bring new 5G services and use cases to market faster. Globally, 42 mobile operator groups are now part of the initiative. Henry Calvert, head of networks at the GSMA, said the drone demonstration represented “a fantastic step forward in the US” and Yigal Elbaz, SVP and network CTO at AT&T, added “open and reusable network APIs are important for the progression of 5G and future wireless technologies”." In last year’s Amsterdam Drone Week, on EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s workshop, Thomas Neubauer highlighted the technology available today that offers a comprehensive view of any #airspace. For instance, first responder services in many parts of the world already rely on this technology to transmit vital video signals back to mission control. Without such connectivity, having sensors in the field would be futile, as mission control would lack the necessary visibility to make informed decisions dynamically. Additionally, network remote ID is another key aspect of visibility provided by this technology. It allows for real-time identification and tracking of #drones, enhancing #airspace #safety and operational #efficiency. This information can be seamlessly provided through existing #cellular networks, which are exceptionally well-suited for supporting these capabilities in the lower airspace. In summary, the technology to achieve comprehensive connectivity and visibility in the airspace is already available. Cellular networks play a massive role in ensuring robust and reliable communication for various aerial #operations, making BVLOS flights possible today. Unlocking the Future of Advanced Drone Operations with Mobile Networks As Unmanned Aircraft Systems (#UAS) continue to evolve, ensuring robust communication links is crucial for seamless operations. C2 links for advanced operations are required to support the basic communication and navigation functions as well as additional services such as payload data transmission, and in the upcoming #U-Space airspaces, the data requirements from all the U-Space services (such as Network Remote ID). While most #drones today use direct radio links, these are limited in range and can be disrupted by obstacles such as buildings or terrain. In other words, direct radio links fall short for long-distance operations, and mobile #connectivity becomes an attractive alternative. With their extensive coverage and reliability, #4G and #5G networks are transforming drone #operations, providing the necessary range and robustness for missions that span kilometres. The more advanced operators also complement their connectivity suite with satellite connections to ensure uninterrupted communication even in the most remote areas. By leveraging the capabilities of mobile and satellite #networks, we at AirborneRF are pushing the boundaries of what drones can achieve, paving the way for innovative applications and enhanced operational efficiency.

This week's very special case study is a collaboration of 5 companies in Japan, which worked together to organize a tsunami evacuation guidance drone. Tsunamis (and natural disasters) are something that happens rather suddenly and have the potential for catastrophic consequences. These entail everything from structural damages and financial costs to the loss of human lives. Therefore every step needs to be taken to minimize adverse effects once a tsunami is coming, and every second counts. That is perhaps why this drone solution is one of the most unique examples of how drones can truly revolutionize the way we live, and in this case save potentially thousands of lives.
