Ambition (un)locked was the theme of yesterday's #velvetinnovation conference. Well, my ambition is to mobilise forces in #brnoregion to lay the tracks for smooth attraction, onboarding and integration of highly-qualified foreign nationals to the benefit of the innovative eco-system. Innovation loves openness. Open minds, open markets, open doors and open arms. As a city and region, we need to 'up our game' to make sure foreign talents find their way and want to stay in Brno and the South-Moravia region. It is an illusion to think that an economy can rely on just local talents for smart and sustainable growth, so it is time for #TAIM, Talent Attraction and Integration Management. As it goes with innovation, it will mean in some cases replacing rusty tracks and designing new ones for unchartered territory. Maybe it will even mean building a new platform or a whole new station, we will see as we benchmark with other cities and regions and translate obstacles into ideas for improvement. The conference brought interesting insights and reminders into how the innovative eco-system thrives (fail fast and learn faster), and into future opportunities such as sustainability and regeneration. It also gave me the opportunity to (re)connect with clever and inspiring people like Jakub Rybar (Thanks Jakub for the motivating conversation and the analogy of laying the tracks), Michal Toman (see you for lunch soon), Petr Chladek (loved your passion and energy), Stanimir Markov (so nice to see my ex- fellow Toastmaster shine. 📢 The European Innovation Scoreboard 2024 has been published today! Here are a few key highlights from this year's edition: 🌟 Denmark remains the most innovative EU country, with Sweden following closely behind. 📈 The European Union's innovation performance continues to rise steadily, showing a 10% increase since 2017. 🌐 Geographic differences in innovation performance persist in the EU, with Innovation Leaders and Strong Innovators mainly located in Northern and Western Europe, while many Moderate and Emerging Innovators are found in Southern and Eastern Europe. 🌍 Switzerland leads as the most innovative country among EU and neighboring European countries, while South Korea remains the top global competitor in innovation. Great to be part of the team right from the data calculation to writing the report.

The indicator "Development of environment-related technologies" seems to be going in the wrong direction in quite a few of the member states and comparative countries including the USA, China, Japan, etc. Actually the best improvement was Albania. Surely everywhere has to be matching this performance, not going backwards? How to interpret? To be honest, not really sure. Check the annexes for the interesting analysis.

The European Innovation Scorecard was released this month and there are some interesting trends among emerging countries - Denmark retains the lead for Innovation Performance in all of the EU states. (My hypothesis cyclists make good innovators!). Estonia, Sweden and Switzerland also in the mix. But it is interesting to see other emerging trends within the EU; measured by Framework Conditions, Investments, Innovation Activities and Impacts - the report itself tells a bigger story of what works 💥 and who benefits 👫 👬 👭 🌎 The document is a whopping 149-page overview, but sets the stage for an example that #Canada could surely follow as we measure our #Innovation outputs across the country.
