After reading this, it’s clear that while global happiness levels may appear stable, the growing inequality in well-being is concerning. The increasing gap between the happiest and least happy individuals, particularly in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, highlights the need for more focused efforts on addressing these disparities. It’s a reminder that true progress goes beyond averages and must consider the well-being of every member of society.
🕳️ Mind the gap: global happiness inequality – the gap between the happiest and least happy members of a society – has grown by more than 20% within the past two decades. While the global average level of happiness has stayed relatively consistent over that time, this chart presents the average across countries of within-country inequality of #wellbeing, by plotting the standard deviation of individual-level evaluations of life as measured by the Gallup World Poll. Global happiness inequality has increased in all world regions and age groups over this time period. It has increased most (for all ages) in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa, and most among the old in Latin America, Southeast Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. "In the heart of South Korea, a quiet crisis is unfolding: thousands of people, mostly middle-aged men, are dying alone each year, unnoticed by family or friends for days, sometimes even weeks" (CNN). The most critical areas for design intervention to shift the trajectory are often the ones that remain hidden. Loneliness has become a modern health crisis—an invisible issue stemming from systems that require better design and policy. The United Nations estimates that by 2050, 35% of households will be made up of single individuals, and 68% of the population will live in urban areas. Our recent 2025 trend themes report identifies "Solo Society" as a significant emerging trend. This trend reflects a shift towards increased single-person households, influenced by subcultures such as incels, anti-dating advocates, and digital nomads who emphasize autonomy. There is a growing acceptance of singlehood and a redefinition of relationships beyond traditional norms. As traditional relationship milestones lose relevance for many, Solo culture normalizes a permanent state of singlehood. This cultural shift contributes to rising social isolation, increased engagement in online communities, and a reimagining of what fulfillment means outside conventional relationships. Looking ahead, if this trend persists, we may see an increase in industries that cater to single living. Social frameworks could evolve to support individuals prioritizing personal freedom over partnership, affecting everything from housing design to consumer products. This trend suggests a future where fulfillment and companionship are redefined through non-romantic connections and digital platforms, as society moves away from traditional social expectations. Design and foresight should prioritize creating inclusive environments that foster social connections and reduce isolation. This involves developing urban spaces that encourage community interaction, integrating technology to facilitate meaningful relationships, and implementing policies that address the root causes of loneliness. By anticipating future demographic shifts, design can proactively shape a world that supports well-being and connection, even as urbanization and single-person households increase. #culturemapping #designstrategy #foresight #futures #trends #society #health #generations #mentalhealth #lonliness https://lnkd.in/e2bmE5Nw

None of this is new. And recognising that is important. It hits differently when these practices are in your bloodline, in your DNA for many generations. The wellness industry is whitewashed and there is inequity in the world at large. This doesn’t make sense to me, when there is so much richness in having been brought up with Eastern philosophies as the norm. A lot of these practices come from the Eastern world and/or African subcontinent, and cultural appreciation means learning about the origins and paying homage to them. Not whitewashing them, taking credit for them and thinking they were only invented in the Western world. What’s your view? #WellnessIndustry #CulturalAppropriation #WhitewashingWellness #EasternPhilosophy #AfricanHeritage #Inequity #DiversityAndInclusion #RespectCulturalOrigins #SupportIndigenousPractices #DecolonizeWellness #IndianCulture #linkedin #linkedinpost #linkedincontent #linkedindaily

In 2023, despite global conflicts, negative emotions fell for the first time since 2014, while positive emotions returned to pre-pandemic levels, according to the Gallup Global Emotions 2024 report. Stress reduction played a key role in this improvement. Young people under 30 showed the highest positivity levels. LMS-CSA conduct the World Poll of Gallup in Morocco for more than a decade. The results in this report of Gallup are based on nationally representative, probability-based samples among the adult population aged 15 and older. The Positive Experience Index and Negative Experience Index are calculated from surveys in 142 countries and areas in 2023. #Gallup #WP #GlobalEmotionsReport #LMS-CSA

In today's fast-paced and isolating world, many men navigate uncharted territory regarding relationships and societal expectations. The excerpt I came across in "Of Boys and Men" sheds light on an alarming "friendship recession," where fewer men are fostering deep friendships or leaning on each other in times of need. The statistics are striking: while 45% of young men in 1990 would turn to their friends during personal challenges, only 22% do so today. Many young men now prioritise familial or romantic relationships over building peer connections. The issue isn't just about loneliness but extends to systemic social withdrawal, as seen in Japan's hikikomori phenomenon—where some men isolate themselves entirely from society. This discussion raises critical questions: 📌 What are the root causes of this growing isolation? 📌 How can we create environments that encourage men to build meaningful connections? 📌 What roles can communities, workplaces, and societal norms play in combating this silent crisis? As members of the #NewMasculinity group, we are uniquely positioned to explore solutions. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPWJ_Fra Whether redefining masculinity, prioritizing emotional well-being, or creating spaces for men to connect authentically, our work can spark transformative change. Regards. 😀

“Happiness among the young has fallen sharply in North America – to a point where the young are less happy than the old.”- World Happiness Report 2024 📉 This caused the US to fall out of the top 20 for the first time. Lithuania ranked first in young happiness. As part of our mission to promote wellbeing at scale, we were honored to host the European launch of this year’s Report at #WOHASU2024, featuring co-editors Jan-Emmanuel De Neve & Lord Professor Richard Layard and chapter researchers Leonie Boyle & Jose Marquez in a panel discussion with our CEO Karen Guggenheim. The WHR—published by the Wellbeing Research Centre powered by important data findings from Gallup — paid special attention to the wellbeing of children and adolescents. The 2024 report used additional datasets to include younger populations in the happiness rankings among nations. WOHASU continues evolving and innovating as the platform for global dialogue focusing on improving the wellbeing of individuals, organizations, schools and communities. ⭐️ Watch the full panel on our YouTube and get insights on the latest findings! Our team is looking for a new Kaimahi! CAYAD is an awesome Kaupapa. We work to affect change within the systems and environments that perpetuate drug and alcohol harm amongst our Rangatahi communities. Here are 4 reasons why I love this mahi and why I think others might too: 1. This Kaupapa has roots into community that go really deep. Our work is grounded in relationships, we meet and collaborate with so many interesting folk and organisations. I feel inspired and grateful often. 2. We think big, envision equitable future states, and pursue them fervently. We're not intimidated by the gnarly challenges we face, they excite us, and we have some interesting and stimulating chats around the tēpu of ways we might shift the dial, cool books we've read, and PD we've attended. 3. We are evidence informed, work from a strength based perspective, and draw on positive youth development frameworks in our decision making. It's not just young people though, we apply an intergenerational lens to our thinking, and we know that for young people to thrive we need to consider holistic wellbeing, whānau wellbeing, community wellbeing, and champion environmental restoration too. 4. You can be yourself. Bring your special interests, lived experience, and unique cultural background. Our team is intersectional, consider diversity a strength, and we are all united in our pursuit of a Te Tiriti-based future. Nau mai haere mai.
