🇬🇧 🇺🇸 At the Strategic Command Conference 2024, Doug Beck, Director of the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit, and General Jim Hockenhull, Commander of Strategic Command, signed an agreement to place liaisons officers in each nation’s Defence innovation hubs. Strategic Command’s innovation team jHub connects world-class technology and talent with users across Defence. The United States Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), based in Silicon Valley, focus on accelerating the adoption of commercial and dual-use technology to solve operational challenges at speed and scale. Doug Beck, the unit’s director, reports directly to the U.S. Secretary of Defense. As technological advancements continue to accelerate, we must collaborate ever more closely with our international allies and industry partners. 🤝 This agreement will help us continue to share knowledge and ideas with our close ally and collaborate on the development of cutting-edge science and technology on both sides of the Atlantic. Partnerships like this help protect both our nations and strengthen what is already the most robust, deepest, and advanced military partnership of any two countries.

Think about the subtle but powerful difference between the two, and how such clearly defined strategic intent could focus your business: “We’re [in] for as long as it takes”, versus “We’re going to do what it takes.” “That’s a statement of a strategic aim that then allows the development of a [strategy].” (Ben Hodges as quoted in the WSJ). AMIA CIC will be my last conference in which I will represent the USAF while in uniform. As I reflect on the invaluable partnerships and relationships I've cultivated across the Federal Government and beyond, the USAF's commitment to collaboration across all modalities has been a cornerstone of my experience, underscoring the power of unity in diversity.   The military's missions may often seem unique, yet the challenges we face are not so different from those encountered by other healthcare organizations. Whether addressing public health crises, managing patient care, or innovating medical technologies, the commonalities far outweigh the differences. This shared landscape of challenges and solutions highlights the importance of learning not only from our triumphs but also from our setbacks.   Understanding and integrating the lessons of the past is crucial as we pave the way forward. As I transition out of uniform, my commitment to this mission remains steadfast. I carry forward the insights gained from this collaborative environment, ready to apply them in new contexts.   To all the colleagues and mentors; your partnership has enriched my career and broadened my perspective. The U.S. military faces a paradox: while the evolving security landscape demands rapid innovation, its promotion system rewards conformity and sidelines the mavericks who challenge the status quo. Mavericks like Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Doolittle were initially marginalized, yet their divergent thinking proved crucial in times of change. Today, rigid budgeting and resourcing processes further inhibit the flexibility needed for creative progress, putting the U.S. military at risk of falling behind more adaptable adversaries.
