Determined to secure the future of the marine ecosystems, the EU project, FutureMARES, is using nature-based solutions to better understand, document and rebuild marine biodiversity. Climate change and human activities accelerate the loss of marine biodiversity. The loss of biodiverse habitats leads to losses in important ecosystem services and cultural benefits. Luckily, nature itself offers solutions to these problems. By implementing so-called Nature-based Solutions, we can better conserve and actively restore the health of marine ecosystems and their commercially and culturally important natural capital. NBS can work hand-in-hand with Nature-inclusive (sustainable) Harvesting (NIH) of marine resources to safeguard a host of ecosystem services, and this is where the FutureMARES project comes into play. A new research published in Nature Communications reveals the crucial link between biodiversity and carbon storage on a global scale. The study underscores how biodiversity loss due to climate change and land use can significantly reduce terrestrial carbon storage, emphasizing the feedback loop where biodiversity loss amplifies climate change impacts. Key findings include: - A decline in plant biodiversity could lead to a loss of 7.4 to 145.95 petagrams of carbon globally, depending on the future scenario (sustainability vs. fossil-fueled development). - Biodiversity conservation and restoration are not just vital for ecosystems but are also critical components of effective climate change mitigation strategies. This research highlights the need for integrated approaches that address biodiversity conservation as a core element of climate policy and solutions. Protecting our planet's biodiversity is not just about preserving the natural world but is also crucial for stabilizing our climate. #Biodiversity #ClimateChange #CarbonStorage #NatureBasedSolutions #Sustainability Link- https://lnkd.in/gkQnP-v3 Reference: Weiskopf, S. With DLD Nature at the Munich Urban Colab Steffi Czerny has hosted arguably the most powerful DLD Conference ever. With the videos now publicly accessible, allow me to provide my personal perspective (not attempting to do justice to all the amazing contributions): The towering talk was by Johan Rockstroem: The Double Crisis: Climate and Biodiversity https://lnkd.in/dCBr9x2g If we cannot recover on biodiversity, the basis for life on earth will collapse beyond climate In case you need to feel the threat differently, watch: Biodiversity Loss – a Security Issue: https://lnkd.in/dJEmcqEZ With Tom Middendorp and Florian Krampe, moderated by Benedikt Franke My third favorite is the break-out: ‘Accelerating Soil Restoration’ https://lnkd.in/dMPfymNd moderated by Roman Werner et al. The key upshot of DLD Nature, picked up Ursula von der Leyen in her speech, was that we need to ‘Put Nature On The Balance Sheet’ and make biodiversity a top priority. This is certainly necessary, but in my view far from sufficient. - Let us review our basic #values: Our society has approached natural resources with a bank robber mentality: ‘We only count the costs of the tools’. Instead, we need to realize that #life is a more fundamental value than humans: All that is unique about Earth depends on life – including us humans as one derivative. Individual #humanrights might turn to be a misguided compass, if not complemented as ‘human rights and obligations’, in particular towards life. - In the midst of the 6th #massextinction of life on this planet, we watch a devastating decimation of mammal species. However, the truly critical issue are plants and microorganisms – if we lose that battle we are fried for good. Towards an #action plan, for biodiversity on land, we can recover and drive the so called #greenpremium to zero: · The pioneering work of #ErnstGoetsch (and Farhah Assaad-Gerbert) have demonstrated that #regenerative agriculture, in particular in #syntropic #agroforestry, incorporating species succession, concurrently solves biodiversity (plants and microbiome), soil health, carbon capture, resilience towards pests and climate stress, and productivity all at the same time! Kudos to Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and #Nabu for starting a series of reports with concrete action plans and numbers, to go ‘beyond conservatism’ and work with Nature, leveraging science and technology, as required for fast adoption and efficient maintenance. · Encouragingly, the #economics assure that actors get a #local benefit (resilience, productivity, absence of poisons), achievable rather #fast (5-10 years, depending on the region and starting point). Memento: Climate action, by contrast, is globally shared and time-delayed – a double-whopper in terms of local returns. Thank you, DLD, for hosting this conference!

🌍 Biodiversity: The Foundation of a Thriving Planet 🌱 A resilient, sustainable ecosystem hinges on biodiversity. Each species, whether small or large, contributes to a balanced and flourishing environment. From providing fertile soils that support agriculture to creating natural defenses against climate change, biodiversity is essential. At BioDScan, we are dedicated to protecting nature and promoting the importance of biodiversity in every ecosystem. By safeguarding each unique species, we secure a sustainable future for generations to come. As #climatechange continues to wreak havoc on the planet in all forms of ways, there is a noted shift in the geographical redistribution of plants and animal species globally. Such a shift will cause the formation of new ecosystems and ecological communities. However, this will also impact human society in ways that we cannot predict without the future of some #AItools. What comes to mind at first glance is the spread of diseases such as the West Nile virus that seems to thrive in warmer climates. I remember seeing something about cases rising in the #UnitedStates due to warmer temperatures throughout the year. An interesting paper about biodiversity redistribution and its effects on human society: https://lnkd.in/eSVvbNF3

Today, on International #BiodiversityDay, the IUCN issued a report about how more than half of all mangroves on the planet are at risk of collapse in the next 26 years, which in and of itself is incredibly concerning. Yesterday's headlines included monkeys dropping from trees in Mexico due to extreme heat from climate change while the worst coral bleaching event to date continues to ravage the Great Barrier Reef. We must address the root causes of our extinction crisis and invest in real solutions that prioritize ecosystem health and biological diversity. Biodiversity and carbon credits alone will not get us there if we continue to increase parts per million of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and pollute our planet. Our actions today, tomorrow, and the over the coming years will either divert us from catastrophe or accelerate it.

Congrats to the United States on launching its first national #ocean #biodiversity strategy. "The National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy will establish the organizational and technical foundation to collect, manage, and apply ocean biodiversity information in evidence-based #protection, #conservation, #restoration, and #sustainable use. Most fundamentally, the ability to observe and track biodiversity in the ocean has not kept pace with the ability to monitor ocean #environmental conditions. A critical need is to track and predict how ocean life is shifting and changing in response to #climatechange and anthropogenic stressors. This requires long-term, sustained biodiversity research and observing that spans decades—similar to meteorological time series. The strategy is inspired by several guiding principles: - Everyone in America should have #equitable access to the benefits provided by the ocean, as articulated in the Ocean Justice Strategy. - Ocean biodiversity monitoring tools and products should be designed for #accessibility to diverse audiences at local, state, territorial, regional, Tribal, national, and global scales, and decision making should elevate and include local and #indigenousknowledge, while mitigating consultation fatigue - Management and policy should be founded on the highest quality evidence and knowledge of ocean life and #ecosystems. - Applying best-available evidence and knowledge requires sustained, coordinated programs for observing changing marine life and environments through time, supported by rigorous taxonomic and genetic characterization of U.S. marine species and dedicated, well-supported data management and delivery systems. - Ensuring broad public accessibility of ocean biodiversity and environmental information requires an inclusive, coordinated, nationwide effort to link and synthesize the many efforts and products in biodiversity and environmental data collection. - Inclusive ocean biodiversity #education and outreach is needed to expand the knowledge base, bring diverse voices to ocean science and conservation, and broaden participation in ocean #stewardship." Shouldn't every country have one? #blueplanet #marineprotection
