Agriculture's definition has remained largely the same since Biblical times—farmers clear land, plant seeds, and harvest crops. But now, there's a growing push to include saltwater farming, especially in vulnerable coastal areas. This shift could restore wetlands, boost climate resilience, and empower coastal communities, all while enhancing agricultural production. A win for people and the planet! 🌱🌊 #SaltwaterFarming #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateResilience #CoastalRestoration https://hubs.li/Q02ZX8wz0

A privilege to be included in an inspiring ITN story focused on resilience within agricultural systems. A subject put forward by our fantastic Natasha Smith at Innovation for Agriculture. This is a positive news story, one that highlights how farms can be at the forefront of solutions to some of humanity's greatest challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable food production. By showcasing innovative practices and projects including The Climate Farm Demo and ClimateSmartAdvisors, this program shines a light on how agriculture can drive resilience, protect ecosystems, and create a brighter, more sustainable future. If you're passionate about sustainable farming or have stories of farms leading the way, now's the time to get involved. Let's amplify the message: agriculture is not just part of the problem; it's a vital part of the solution. Join us on Wednesday 11th December to see how Farming is part of the solution to water pollution. An event with increasing importance as storm Darragh approaches. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #Agriculture #PositiveImpact #Resilience

The future of farming is about more than just producing food — agriculture can help combat climate change. But we need to transform the way we think about farming. When we consider farmers as stewards of the land, modern agricultural practices can help us build more resilient local food systems. Director of the CSFS, Dr. Sean Smukler, explains how we need to support farmers so they can become more resilient to changing weather patterns and other effects of climate change. Researchers are developing and testing strategies to help farmers adapt their practices so they can better nurture local ecosystems. In my piece for @sustainviews, I talk about how farmers will need to diversify their income by managing land for biodiversity, flood prevention, and carbon sequestration — all of which support food production. Private green finance is key to this transition, and government and industry must work together to establish clear, standardised frameworks 🤝📊.
More standardisation and clear methodologies are needed to support UK farmers with "nature friendly" farming, chief executive of the Nature Friendly Farming Network and farmer Martin Lines writes in an opinion piece for Sustainable Views. "At events, I have introduced myself as an asset manager of natural capital, providing a range of goods and services society wants; people sometimes need an extra nudge to realise this is a definition of a farmer," he says.
