On the 23th of July 2024 Innovest Advisory attended an incredibly insightful event hosted by Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa-Mucheka, PhD, CFP®, MBA, TEP from Jersey Finance in partnership with Mellville Douglas. The event featured an engaging panel led by Dr Rufaro and leaders from different areas within the impact ecosystem, unpacking the topic “Responsible Investing and its Impact on Africa”. Some of our favourite take-aways from the event included Tax perspectives by Andrew Wellsted from OWP Partners who shared his view that tax structures have potential to incentivise greater capital flows into impact investments on the continent, and that Africa ought to leverage this opportunity especially where green infrastructure development is concerned. We also enjoyed hearing Diane Laas from Mellville Douglas speak about the tailwinds the global impact investment landscape is starting to experience as a result of the wealth transfer currently happening within the High Networth Individual space. Through their Global Impact Investment Fund, they are noting that Millenials HNI’s have a strong desire to invest their wealth impactfully, a trend which will likely result in more HNI capital being directed towards impact opportunities. The event ended on an encouraging note with the panel and the audience agreeing “We are the first generation to experience the effects of climate change, and the last generation who have the opportunity to do something about it!” Congratulations to Dr Rufaro and the Jersey Finance team for hosting such a consequential conversation for the impact investment ecosystem! #impactinvesting #Africa #investinAfrica #sustainability #impactadvisory #innovestadvisory #jerseyfinance

With a formal background in finance, his career spans multiple decades and industries. He was the Chief Business Officer of Wesgro , a promotion agency for tourism and investment in South Africa, and the Investor Relations Manager for Goodwell Investments , a Dutch impact fund. His unique perspective on finance, investment, and sustainable development is invaluable. Here are the key takeaways from our interview: 🌍 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Many investors overestimate the risks of investing in Africa. Like with all investments, there are risks. It’s crucial to recognize the continent’s diverse economies and the localized nature of conflicts. 📊 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Investors want to see where their money goes and what impact they have on environments/communities. It is also important for the industry to develop a set of basic reporting standards, per sector that everyone adopts to make it easier to compare performance across companies. 🌱 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘇𝘇𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱: Impact investing needs to be more than just a trend. It’s about genuine commitment to driving positive change and creating meaningful social impact. It also requires a fair amount of patient capital in order to achieve the desired results. 💡 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Imagine impact investing as a mainstream asset class! This shift is vital for addressing global inequalities and empowering developing countries. 💱 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀: He identified a few things such as limited data, risk perception, exits and currency fluctuations as some of the major obstacles to impact investing in Africa. 🤝 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆: A top-down approach won’t work. Building ecosystems where investors and entrepreneurs collaborate is essential for success. 🚀 𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Aspiring impact investors should be driven by a genuine desire to make a difference, working collaboratively with communities to create lasting change.
