I guess there comes a point when you have to pay back some of that $6.6BN raise....With the announcement that OpenAI are now looking to charge users ~$200.00 pcm for access to their suite of models. This will be where the rubber really hits the road for Generative AI and the potential realisation of AGI. Which has come under a lot of scrutiny in the last couple of months. Perhaps this explains a pivot to become more akin to a search engine on steroids. Earlier this year, I would have said it makes little sense to train your own language model, and typically, I stand by that statement for now. But at almost $2400 per calendar year per seat for access to greater levels of compute and model intelligence.... organisations will have to have a really compelling business case to justify signing off spend at levels that could start to move into the $000,000's. Even for Small to medium enterprises. I am curious to see what these changes mean to direct API costs in time. Perhaps the advent of small language models will become more of the norm and maybe Zuckerberg had it right with Open Sourcing Llama all along. Especially when organisations want to wrap their own data around LLM's with RAG and make it secure in the guise of their business. Personally, I am a Claude fanboy and have found the OpenAI interface more clunky and busy since the inception of real-time search and citations. OpenAI's missed opportunity is not incentivizing the adoption of custom GPTs by refusing to create any financial incentive for developers whatsoever. Of course, there are promises. However, until OpenAI empowers developers, consumers will not find custom GPT apps, because that's not how it works.
