Join us on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 1 pm ET/7 pm CET for our next 3Rs Training Webinar, featuring Dr. Catharine E. Krebs, a member of the Coalition to Illuminate and Address Animal Methods Bias (COLAAB) and medical research program manager at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Dr. Krebs will discuss animal methods bias, a tendency in scientific research to favor animal-based methods over non-animal alternatives, even when the latter may be more relevant, accurate, or ethical. This bias influences the design, conduct, and evaluation of research, leading to the continued use of animal models despite the availability of innovative, human-relevant methods. It often stems from traditional practices, regulatory frameworks, or misconceptions about the reliability of non-animal approaches. Tackling this bias is essential to promoting more ethical and effective research, especially in toxicology and biomedical fields. Don’t miss this important conversation on improving research practices! Researchers, if you're working with in vitro systems, here’s another reminder to share your insights! Humane Society International India, in partnership with IndiaBioscience and CPHMS | Centre for Predictive Human Model Systems is conducting a survey to better understand your experience submitting in vitro data for journal and grant applications. The survey includes questions, such as if reviewers of manuscripts or grants asked you to validate in vitro findings with animal data. Share your views in our survey! 🔬🧪🐁 Link: https://lnkd.in/gxx7bkxx #ResearchandToxicology #AnimalWelfare #Research #InVitro #Data #Technology

We had a look at animal-to-human translation of therapeutic interventions, and I would like to highlight two interesting results: -> The overall proportion of therapies progressing from animal studies was 50% to human studies, 40% to RCTs, and 5% to regulatory approval. But also: -> Notably, our meta-analysis showed an 86% concordance between positive results in animal and clinical studies. This seems to confirm what other studies found: Yes, only a small fraction of therapies shown to be successful in animals reach the market, but "contrary to widespread assertions, the rate of successful animal-to-human translation may be higher than previously reported." As people involved in drug development know very well, the translation success is not only a function of the concordance between animal models and human patients, but is dependent on additional factors. Nevertheless: the low rate of final approval indicates potential deficiencies in the design of both animal studies and early clinical trials. To ameliorate the efficacy of translating therapies from bench to bedside, we advocate for enhanced study design robustness and the reinforcement of generalizability. https://lnkd.in/eRrXyH3k ✍️ Authors: Benjamin Victor Ineichen Eva Furrer, Servan L. 🐷 Very happy and proud to be a member of this NHPig project! Specifically, our research group M3-BIORES, in partnership with VeriSIM Life, will lead a work package focused on minipig-specific technologies to enable automated data collection and processing. 🧪 The end goal? An intelligent animal housing system for continuous, automated monitoring of minipigs in their home pens. 📊 Our work will focus on the 'Refine' aspect of the 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace) principles, by enhancing the quality and quantity of data gathered during pre-clinical studies. Specifically, we will target the development of digital biomarkers on two different aspects of mini-pig health: Neurobehavioral Biomarkers: Using computer vision tools, we will capture subtle changes in movement that signal key indicators of mini-pig behaviour and welfare. Physiological Biomarkers: We will capture key physiological information in collaboration with our WP partner ETISENSE. We use their unique jacket telemetry technology to monitor cardiorespiratory function and overall activity. 🎯 Our impact: --> Minimize animal stress due to handling --> Maximize the collection of high-quality data from experiments --> Improve the timeliness and quality of interventions when needed Through this project, we aim to establish these technologies as essential to a more ethical, efficient, and data-driven approach to preclinical studies. 🤝 If you work in biosensors, AI, or digital animal health, let's connect and explore potential synergies!
