Its a reminder to uplift and amplify the disabled community's voices, and to celebrate each person's uniqueness as a natural part of human diversity. World Disability Day: Significance and the Role of Society World Disability Day, observed on December 3rd, highlights the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with disabilities. It emphasizes building an inclusive society where individuals with disabilities can thrive without barriers. The role of the common man is vital in creating such an environment. Acts of kindness, empathy, and understanding can make a significant difference. Treating disabled individuals with respect, ensuring accessibility in public spaces, offering support without pity, and advocating for their rights are small but impactful steps everyone can take. People with disabilities bring unique talents, perspectives, and resilience to society. Recognizing their contributions and empowering them with equal opportunities enriches communities and fosters mutual growth. Together, we can build a world where everyone feels valued and included. July is Disability Pride Month! On July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. Today, according to the ADA National Network, there are 54 million Americans living with a disability. When people ask me what I am most proud of at work I always say that what has been the most meaningful to me is planning Accessible KWESTs. I routinely missed out on global experiences in college because of my disability. I can't tell you how many times I heard that there was nothing that could be done to make programs accessible because they were "optional" or "co-curricular." Over the last two years here is what I've realized: 1) Global co-curricular travel programs absolutely can accommodate students with disabilities who want to participate, many times with little or no additional cost to the program through prioritizing accessibility from the beginning rather than as an afterthought. 2) Setting goals and communicating that your program needs to be broadly accessible (mobility, hearing, vision, sensory, etc.) makes it easier to be agile when specific needs you may not have planned for present themselves. 3) Programs planned from start to finish with broad accessibility in mind are not only attractive to students with disabilities but to ALL students. Because providing enhanced access and removing barriers is a benefit to everyone. 4) Including students with disabilities on global co-curricular experiences challenges students who do not have disabilities to think differently about their peers and others with disabilities. This is especially true when non-disabled students are also introduced to the social model of disability (people aren't disabled, environments are disabling). I can't wait to see how we can make KWEST and all our programs more accessible in the future!

Celebrating Disability Month and International Day of Persons with Disabilities – 3 December Today, we recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities as part of Disability Month. This year’s theme reminds us of the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and the empowerment of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of society, including education and employment. At Wheeling Towards Success (WTS), our mission is to drive transformation by creating opportunities for persons with disabilities through accredited training and learnership programs. We are proud to contribute to breaking barriers, promoting inclusion, and fostering independence for differently-abled individuals. As someone living with a disability, this day holds personal significance. It serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to challenge misconceptions and build a world that embraces diversity. Key reflections for Disability Month: 🌟 Empowerment through Education: Access to skills development and training is critical to empowering persons with disabilities. 🌟 Breaking Barriers: It’s essential to create workplaces and learning environments that are inclusive and accessible. 🌟 Celebrating Abilities: Disability is not inability. July is Disability Pride Month! 💚 Celebrated every July in the UK since 2015, it's an opportunity to raise awareness of disabilities, start positive conversations and celebrate the diversity of the disabled community. Events are held locally around the country in July, allowing people with disabilities to come together and celebrate being themselves, no matter their differences. It's also a chance to raise awareness of the challenges they still face every day to be treated equally. How to celebrate Disability Pride; 💚 Involve the disabled community in the planning - Gain insight from your disabled colleagues, or consider an anonymous form so those with undisclosed disabilities can help contribute. 💚 Raise awareness - Start conversations with your colleagues about disability and the disabled community. 💚 Provide training - The more you and your colleagues know about the disabled community, the better you can support those who are part of it in the workplace.

July is Disability Pride Month! As we celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed on 7/26/90, let’s make it a time to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. People with disabilities deserve to live full, self-determined, independent lives—just like everyone else. This year’s theme is “We Want a Life Like Yours,” reflecting the disability community’s dreams for life experiences that are too often denied. For me, this is personal. Can you imagine having a child who doesn’t have friends knock on the door to ask him to play or one who doesn’t get invited to sleepovers and rarely gets invited to birthday parties? Yes, people are polite (most of the time) but he is still treated like a “sometimes friend”. While we’ve made progress, discrimination and ignorance still persist. Let's use this month to educate ourselves, advocate for change, and create a more inclusive society for all. Together, we can do better! #DisabilityAwareness #InclusionMatters
