🎧 On my walk today, Spotify queued up Tyla’s hit "Truth or Dare." While the song is about lost love, it resonated differently for me—thinking about my clients and my own professional path. 🏢 Have you ever worked for a company or leader that didn’t value you? Been laid off, pushed out, or even forced to quit? Maybe you left, and people were shocked that you moved on. 💼 Then, did you bounce back to a role that was better aligned with your passions, talents, and goals? With a better title, salary, or opportunity? ❤️ And after you thrived, did that old company, manager, or colleagues start showing interest again? 🙅🏾♀️ It feels empowering to move past what my husband calls "dry begging"—waiting for that validation from a place or person that didn’t recognize your genius. ❓ So, how good are you at: 1. Realizing when your brilliance no longer aligns with a company's needs? 2. Recognizing when it can’t be fixed, despite best efforts? 3. Finding the courage to step into the unknown and seek something better? 4. Taking the steps to land where you’re truly valued? We all have agency to change our situation, but sometimes we need help to move forward. A strong coach can guide you toward the opportunities you’re meant for. Well done Spotify! For being ‘Spot On’. ‘WFA’ ……nope it’s not a typo. This is ‘Work From Anywhere’. Acknowledged that this might not be possible for every profession and sector. Guess what? Some employers genuinely treat their staff like adults. What is an adult? 💁 ➡️ demonstrating responsibility ➡️ taking accountability ➡️ resilience ➡️ self sufficient and independent ➡️ respect for boundaries ➡️ accountability ➡️ emotionally intelligent ➡️ self awareness ➡️ growth mindset Usual legal disclaimer applies - this is NOT an exhaustive list. Why then do many employers treat staff as: 👎 irresponsible 👎 lacking accountability 👎 unmotivated 👎 not self aware Do they really think that we don’t understand the tram lines of our responsibilities and can’t balance them if left to WFA? Do we need to redefine the narrative to work is something you do as opposed to a place you come to (for some?). Does your career ever feel like a Netflix show you’re only watching because you’ve invested too much time to quit? Then it may be time to find a role with a better storyline. 🎬 🌟 🤩 REAL TALK: Do you ever feel like you’re just going through the motions at work? Maybe you start your day feeling unmotivated, staring at the same tasks, meetings, and projects that no longer challenge or excite you. 😓 You tell yourself it’s fine, ‘At least I have a stable job.’ Buuuuut deep down, there’s a nagging voice that says, ‘I’m meant for more than this.’ Yet, you stay. You stay because the thought of making a change feels overwhelming. What if you fail? What if you’re not good enough? What if you step into a bigger role and everyone realizes you’re not as capable as they thought? Sound familiar? You’re not alone. This happened to me when I worked at Spotify. 💚 🎵 I love Spotify and I am very grateful I had the chance to work and make an impact at Spotify. But in retrospect, I definitely know I stayed there for a few years too long. I liked my job but I wasn't developing in a way that I wanted to anymore. I also didn't know what career move I wanted to make next. And I was scared to make a change because I was scared of the unknown. I kept telling myself it was a great company to work for (and it really was!), so why would I leave? For many high-achieving women in tech, imposter syndrome and fear of the unknown keep them stuck in roles that no longer serve them. It’s easy to feel safe in your comfort zone, but staying there can also hold you back from reaching the next-level version of you that’s been itching to break free. 🚀 But here’s the thing, you don’t have to do this alone. The first step is recognizing that you deserve more. ✨ What would it look like for you to fully embrace your potential and step into a role that truly excites you?

1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY REFLECTION I often get asked about the difference in culture between Spotify and Bytedance. My response (disclaimer: my personal thoughts/experiences and not in any way the views of my current or former employer) focuses on the corporate values and varied relationship to the music industry: ByteDance is a tech company that buys music and TikTok is a product used to promote music. Spotify is a tech company founded with the soul of a music company that is going through a spiritual journey as it grows into new verticals. Spotify leadership spoke frequently about its 3 missions: User Experience (1 billion users enjoying art/audio creations), Creator (1 million creators living off art) and Spotify Economics (building a profitable and sustainable business that continues to innovate it’s way into a large public enterprise). While many of my former coworkers invested extreme passion to the creator mission, the user experience was always primary… while pressure to become profitablity as a public company grew as a priority over time to achieve sustainable economics. This tension between these 3 goals is ambitious and complex… I give the leadership lots of credit for building an incredible culture to support the ambition. The company values of innovative, playful, collaborative, sincere and passionate felt embraced by the collective. At ByteDance there are ByteStyles, a list of mantras that are emojis in our chat and part of every employees performance assessment. Some notable ones include, Always Day 1 (you never stop learning and facing new challenges), Be Candid and Clear (directness is a must), Be Courageous and Aim for the Highest (don’t sacrifice ambition in the face of risk). One goal is for TikTok is to build a brand that is one of the most trusted companies in tech. The North Star vision is less my personal focus, while the ways of working are more performance oriented and structured. It’s a strong contrast from the highly autonomous nature of Spotify teams (give context and clarity and let smart people do the jobs the best way they see fit). Both companies encourage bottoms up goal setting and innovation stemming from minimizing hierarchy in decision process. Some of the other differences stem from the products, the business models, and Swedish and Chinese Tech culture. Spotify has a strong American presence that plays foil to the consensus building Swedish culture. ByteDance leadership was inspired by American Tech (Always Day 1) but maintains its Chinese characteristics. Size: ByteDance is an order of magnitude larger (>100k employees v ~10k). 'Leading through change' was the title of yesterdays insightful panel to launch Spotify's new community 'Nine Muses.' I am a fan of Marilyn Zakhour and her focus on culture and hearing her liken change to the stages of grief made so much sense. She described resilience as our ability to adapt to change and as leaders it is our responsibility to shepherd the process understanding that our teams will adapt in their own way and at their own pace. A key takeaway for me was her comment to 'be the wave and not the wall' meaning be the change and don't stand still in the face of change. I also loved the idea to learn how to tell a new story about the change as I realised I have often had to do that myself to get over what she called 'post traumatic growth'. Speaking of past trauma 😅 , I also fully resonated with Iman Al-Omrani as she talked through some of her experiences working at Expo 2020 Dubai, an experience which felt like the dictionary we all needed, to learn how to adapt to change. What happens when the pace of change is just too fast? Iman mentioned that she had to set her mind, body and soul to a different pace. I know from my experience at Expo, when things are moving at such a high pace, all you can really do is stay calm and be prepared to change and flex your adaptability muscles for the unknown. The experience definitely set me up as a stronger leader and has given me the confidence to face bigger challenges (like Expo 2025 Osaka 😉 ) What I took away more than the panel itself is the clear need and appetite for more communities and conversations. Having just launched our community 'Mission Visible' last week, it was clear that Spotify had come to the same conclusion that we are in an era where despite changes & the growth in technology and AI, there is a yearning for connection. At the end of the day I believe all these communities work together and it always comes down to people with a common goal, learning & growing. Spotify Wrapped, but make it The Nova 🎁 As we step toward the holidays and into the unlimited possibilities of 2025, let’s take a real, honest moment to reflect on 2024. This year was anything but a smooth ride—it was full of unexpected lessons, countless pivots, and challenges that tested our resilience and commitment. We launched bold new initiatives at record speed, sparked conversations that mattered, and celebrated the power of women standing shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity. And while there were growing pains, missteps, and moments where we wondered if it was all worth it, there was also undeniable magic: women finding their voices, creating connections that felt like home, and proving to themselves that they are capable of more than they imagined.
