📚 𝗨𝗖𝗟𝗔 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗜-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀   UCLA is breaking new ground in winter 2025 with a comparative literature course featuring materials developed by AI. Covering literature from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, this course is developed by using #Kudu, a textbook platform created by UCLA professor Alexander Kusenko.   𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗞𝘂𝗱𝘂 Professor Zrinka Stahuljak provided Kudu with her lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, and YouTube videos from previous iterations of the course. Kudu then transformed this content into a complete package: textbooks, homework assignments, and TA tools. Creating the course takes about 3–4 months, but Kudu helps to streamline the process, requiring professors to dedicate no more than 20 hours to tasks like reviewing and editing materials.   𝗔𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 Unlike public tools like ChatGPT, Kudu operates in a controlled, closed-loop environment. It only responds to questions based on course content provided by the professor, ensuring academic integrity and reducing the potential for misuse. For #students, it offers a safe platform to ask questions anonymously—questions they might otherwise hesitate to ask in class—and provides answers drawn directly from the professor’s input.   𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 Originally developed for UCLA science courses, Kudu’s expansion into the humanities demonstrates the platform’s versatility. Stahuljak’s course represents Kudu’s debut in UCLA’s Humanities Division, though the platform is already in use this term in a social sciences course   Looking ahead, Stahuljak plans to use Kudu in additional courses, noting that the platform allows her to spend more time guiding students through primary texts and teaching essential skills such as critical thinking and analysis. 🌟 Grateful for a Successful Roundtable Discussion! 🌟 🔅 A heartfelt thank you from Lucy Hutchinson and me to all the guests who joined our insightful roundtable discussion yesterday. 🔅 Your contributions were invaluable, and I’m thrilled to share some of the key takeaways: 1️⃣ The Vision: We discussed the importance of establishing a clear pedagogical philosophy before beginning to examine the role of AI in a system. 2️⃣ Self-Evaluation and Self-Assessment: We discussed the importance of self-evaluation at all levels of learning. Building confidence in learning and teaching starts with understanding our own progress. 3️⃣ Teaching as a Verification Tool: One powerful way to verify our understanding is by teaching what we’ve learned. Students can describe concepts to the chatbot and gauge their grasp based on its responses. 4️⃣ AI Feedback: AI's role in providing rapid, meaningful, and individualized feedback is pivotal. It can assess and encourage learners in a personalized way. 5️⃣ Caution with AI Over-Reliance: We discussed the challenges seen by universities, particularly the over-reliance on AI grading and plagiarism checkers, which can be detrimental, especially for ESL students. 6️⃣ Faster or Better?: We discussed the importance of analysing the WHY of our use of AI tools. Do we want to do this faster or better? 7️⃣ We shared what we love about AI and what leaves us feeling stressed, confused, or unsure. All in all, it was a great session, and we thank you all for enriching the dialogue. Who benefits from your genius? I want you to stop and think about this for a moment. When you are at your best—producing knowledge products and creating new knowledge—who benefits? Is it a particular organization? Is it a business bottom line? Does your genius benefit big tech? Or does it benefit society? Often, the answer to that question lies in how we frame our studies and our research questions. For example, you can learn to code in a variety of different schools and colleges across a university campus. Sometimes that work is done in the service of profits, or big tech, or risk assessment, and sometimes, to the benefit of society. As I am getting to know others in my cohort of PhD students, I am struck by how society-focused their research questions are. One student is exploring access to information for incarcerated individuals and its potential effect on recidivism rates. Another is delving into how large language models are reshaping language arts education. Yet another is focused on enhancing the organization and accessibility of medical records through AI. As Allen Renear reinforces in our seminar, Information Science is a meta-discipline—a field that doesn’t fit neatly into the traditional boundaries of other academic programs. Instead, it draws from a broad array of disciplines, uniting them with an information science lens and a shared goal of improving society. This realization reinforces why I’m here. Information Science may not always have a clear-cut definition, but its power lies in its ability to address complex societal challenges through diverse and innovative approaches. I’m excited to be part of this community, and I look forward to seeing how our collective efforts will shape the future. #iSchoolisMySchool #iSchoolUI

I'm integrating GenAI into my literature class for a fresh take on student projects—and a break from GenAI-generated essays! This week, my students used AI tools to create social media profiles and posts for characters from their assigned readings. By feeding image generators detailed prompts, they made thoughtful choices about mood, character, and tone, all of which helped them explore deeper themes in the texts. The result? Students not only enjoyed the creative challenge, but they engaged in meaningful interpretation, finding it both rewarding and anything but boring. There are some changes I'll make for next semester, but this one is going in the WIN column. #GenAI #EdTech #TeachingInnovation #LiteratureClass
