This idea to write a review on a Nobel prize discovery has a precedence. Our first one was on the Ubiquitin mediated protein degradation that followed as a result of my postdoctoral work on proteasomes and their subunits. This review was part of the Introduction of Dilip's thesis, which was also the first thesis from our laboratory. Apart from the text, the simple but attractive figures made by Pankaj, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab, needs to be mentioned. We do not know what or how we did but this review has been one of the major success stories of the lab with more than 850 citations so far! The abstract is attached in this post! 🌟 Thrilled to Announce Our Latest Publication! 🌟 I’m excited to share that our second paper has been published in Plant Methods! Our work, “Optimization of a rapid, sensitive, and high throughput molecular sensor to measure canola protoplast respiratory metabolism as a means of screening nanomaterial cytotoxicity,” represents months of dedicated research and collaboration. On the 5th of December, I was fortunate enough to get a chance to present my poster at the Molecular Biosciences Research Thrust (MBRT) Research Symposium held at the University of the Witwatersrand. There were plenty of interesting talks as well as many familiar faces and even a few new ones. The aim of my research is to develop a Nextflow workflow that integrates multiple CNV callers for improved CNV calling from exome sequencing data. The workflow will include a VCF conversion step, a merging step, a feature annotation step and finally random forest prediction and validation steps.

Overarching themes of the rapid testing and molecular diagnostics session are optics-based detection and immune/affinity binding to targets of interest.

The recent Nobel prize for medicine to Gary Ruvkun (who by the way also made very significant discoveries in aging research) is a timely reminder of the importance of the tiny worm, C. Elegans, and other model systems such as the fruitfly Drosphila melanogaster, or the yeast Sacharomyces cerevisiae, and of basic research to the whole biomedical research enterprise. Prof Paul Donnelly was named the inaugural Richard Robson Chair of Chemistry at a Faculty event last week. This new Chair is named after Prof Richard Robson, who created groundbreaking models and developed metal-organic frameworks - an entirely new field of chemistry. Prof Donnelly and his research group with Bio21 Institute are using chemistry to save lives. Their research is working towards better diagnostic and treatment options for cancer, Alzheimer's disease and more. To quote our Dean Prof Moira O'Bryan: “The event is also a timely reminder of the importance of chemistry as a core underpinning of many other disciplines. It often goes uncelebrated, but it is critical to the most disease therapies, the energy transition, solutions to environmental pollution and many other areas.” Congratulations Prof Paul Donnelly! 🌟 SSE Lab Spotlight 🌟 Today we are highlighting on the lab of Dr. Piotr Mak, an Associate Professor in the SLU Department of Chemistry. Here we have pictured his state-of-the-art laser laboratory. Dr. Mak's research is sponsored by a prestigious NSF CAREER award. More about Dr. Mak's research: His research focuses on understanding how structure affects the function of various proteins to decipher the mechanism of oxidative chemistry they perform. This is important because these enzymes often play a critical role in human physiology, such as metabolism of drugs and carcinogens as wells as biosynthesis of steroids and vitamins. These objectives are accomplished by employment of several spectroscopic techniques, with resonance Raman spectroscopy being the primary research tool.
