An interesting read that I stumbled across detailing the external threats to our water infrastructure nationwide. Always good to be vigilant but great to know the many failsafe's that our engineers and cities have in place to keep our drinking water safe and secure! Would love to hear what my network thinks of the warnings and potential attacks? Is there credence to it and something of serious concern? Or is this just a warning to be sure we remain vigilant?

Defend Against the Storm: Analyzing a SYN Flood Attack SYN flood attacks are a common type of denial-of-service (DoS) attack, designed to overwhelm a server by exploiting the TCP handshake process. In a normal connection, a client sends a SYN request, the server responds with a SYN-ACK, and the client finalizes with an ACK. But in a SYN flood, the attacker sends a massive number of SYN requests without completing the handshake, causing the server to keep resources tied up until it's overwhelmed. Understanding these attacks helps in implementing protections like SYN cookies and adjusting timeout settings to mitigate their impact. Stay ahead by knowing the signs of an attack and responding quickly!

Cyberattacks on water systems are rising, with Russian state-linked “hacktivists” posting videos of seemingly amateur intrusions. But their prank-like nature belies more malicious possibilities, as a recent attack on the small Texas town of Stanton, reported here for the first time, illustrates. Cybersecurity threats to water utilities have accelerated in 2024 as Iranian, Chinese, and Russian threat actors increasingly target these critical systems. A spate of apparent joy-riding intrusions of rural water systems by could-be Russian state-linked hacktivists has continued unabated this year. Experts say these attacks, undertaken primarily by young amateurs, have caused little serious harm. But, they add, if experienced OT hackers took the reins, havoc could be wreaked on any number of the nearly 52,000 local water and irrigation systems in the US and other water facilities around the globe. One recent water system intrusion in Stanton, Texas, population 2,700, reported here for the first time, illustrates how vulnerabilities in under-resourced water facilities — the lowest-hanging fruit in the OT security space — must be addressed quickly. link in comments
