Did you know that in 1983 ISBM launched its first course offering at Penn State titled, “Value and Pricing Strategy” by Dr. Irv Gross? And, in that same year, ISBM is recognized by Penn State’s VP of Research as an “Area of Excellence”. And here we are in 2024 still teaching these same, timeless principles!

"Most of the institutions in the fledgling consortium, striving to redesign their way to a more secure future, would do so by reducing the number of academic credits they require from the typical 120 to as low as 90." ~I'm not sure that is solving anything, frankly. Wrong conversation. Ostensibly, the same issues exist, just in a shorter format: Degree programs predicated on outdated curricula; calendar-based format; Carnegie seat time metrics; outdated grade schema; horrible credit articulation from community colleges, and on and on. Lopping off one year may save a little money, but since most students now take 6 years (and roughly less than 70% finish), I'm not sure the cost savings really amount to much. If they are serious they should be looking at CBL.

🌟 Reflecting on an engaging WTMC Workshop! 🌟 This week, I participated in the WTMC spring workshop, where we explored the thought-provoking theme of "Endangered Futures." 🔍 We examined this topic from an STS perspective, engaging in critical discussions and exercises aimed at understanding how STS scholarship on 'futures' can serve as a dynamic intermediary in a world fraught with tensions. One particularly engaging exercise involved me getting hands-on with Lego and exploring the concept of action research. 🧱 It was a creative and insightful way to delve into the complexities of our topic, sparking innovative ideas and discussions.

"Amazing. Excellent! This update to the EEV process is truly a game changer for program directors. This change has been extremely positive for us." - Dr. Jennifer Nicoloro, PhD, MLS(ASCP)cm, Director of MLS Program at Mass General Brigham. The BOC’s recent optimization of application processing, known as “auto-eligibility,” has significantly shortened the timeline for program graduates to appear on the Program Director’s electronic eligibility verification (EEV). This is transforming how program directors support their students by facilitating an expedient way for students to schedule their exam. The BOC operations' optimizations led to Dr. Nicoloro's success story, showing the incredibly positive impact of this update on student professional pathways and experiences. This also illuminates how the BOC provides solutions related to laboratory professional workforce challenges. #ASCPBOC #ASCPi #EEV #LaboratoryMedicine #ClinicalPathology

High ceilings equal lower marks! You couldn’t make it up, but scientists at the University of South Australia have discovered that the height of exam hall ceilings affects exam results! A team led by Dr Isabella Bower took 15,600 undergrad results across three campuses and cross referenced the results with the height of the exam hall ceiling. Bower found those who sat exams in halls with high ceilings achieved lower marks. The problem is she has no idea why this is the case, but believes the brain must react to its surrounding in way we do not understand yet. So, simply sitting in a bigger room causes brain activity to behave differently when concentrating of difficult tasks. Ultimately it may mean universities and the professional bodies will have to look at where they make their students sit exams. Bower said: “These spaces are often designed for purposes other than examinations, such as gymnasiums, exhibitions, events and performances.” Read our eights pages of news in the latest magazine: https://lnkd.in/e-eqma7T.

Is prior learning a part of your institution's culture? #LearningMobility is a learner-centered innovation, where systems, processes, programs, and initiatives must be designed around the needs and best interests of the learner of today and the future at every stage of their journey.
Innovative credentials are here to stay, but what is your institution's culture around prior learning assessments and innovative credentials? Addressing your institution's existing culture around prior learning could help you decide your next move. Awesome short (15m) interview about a forthcoming update report to 2019 AACRAO research on #CPL, #PLA, #PLAR #RPL, #VPL (pick your acronym), focused on messy #portfolio approaches. This is just Credit for Prior Learning, which I find a bit narrow, even within an academic context (lots of other purposes for recognition)... ...but there's lots of great stuff and I can't wait for the report. The big TIL for me is Jon Calderwood's suggestion about actually developing and credentialing faculty in their roles as Advisors and Assessors for #RPL. They're far and away the key actors in HE, but currently, over 60% have no formal training. Jon suggests that insitutions could start reporting faculty PD as a KPI for academic quality to accreditors. I suggest that accreditors could start asking for it... 8-> Food for thought for the upcoming #VPLBiennale in Ireland and for us up here in Canada, as #CAPLA, Canada's counterpart to CAEL, prepares for a pan-Canadian scan of PD for #RPL. NB: Andy Brown, Bonnie Kennedy and others on the Credentialing and Certification committee. Finally, kudos to Noah Geisel for his ongoing role as a tireless whisperer for #alternativecredentials #digitalbadges #openbadges. Now with #PLA. Will Jon be at the The Badge Summit @ CU Boulder, I wonder?
