🚲 Did you know that European cities are improving cycling for citizens? Since the publication of the Urban Mobility Framework policy in December 2021, more sustainable modes of transport are undeniably happening across European cities 🇪🇺. ⚠️ Dirty air, congested streets, unsafe roads, excessive noise and persistent carbon emissions are some of the problems that many are eager to address in order to transform their road space and transport systems. Here are some examples of recent urban measures that enhance cycling in several European cities: 📍 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺: The city implemented a 30 km/h speed limit for motor vehicles on 80% of its roads. 📍 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀 Cycling traffic has increased by 166% thanks to bold political leadership matched by the proper levels of funding and infrastructure building. 📍 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗵: Created a campaign to encourage people to travel by bicycle. 📍 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶: Will implement a bicycle action plan until 2025 to make the city cyclable for people of all ages year-round. 📍𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀: Set in motion an urban mobility plan that implements cycling infrastructure. Dive into this article if you want to know more details about these measures and their impact! Via @eucyclistsfederation 👉 https://loom.ly/sXpjGpY #Cycling #Europe #TransportationSustainability

Did you know that in Europe, bicycles often outpace cars in city environments? Not only that, but they also help save a significant 16 million tons of CO2 annually. What more reason do you need to celebrate #WorldBicycleDay? 🚲 🌍 More and more cities are following in the footsteps of bike-friendly leaders such as Amsterdam and Stockholm, making significant strides in creating safer, more inclusive environments for cycling. 🛒 And with Europeans purchasing approximately 17.7 million bicycles in 2023 alone, it's clear that the bicycle is more than just a mode of transport—it's a movement towards sustainability! Yet, according to Eurostat, cars still dominate our streets as the primary mode of daily transport ⬇️ ✅ To meet the EU’s climate, zero pollution and energy efficiency goals, cycling must be at the centre of mobility policies at all levels. The recent European Declaration on Cycling is a crucial step in this direction, but there's still much work to be done. 🤝 This World Bicycle Day, EIT Urban Mobility reinforces its commitment to fostering active modes of transport and advancing its mission towards sustainable, safe, inclusive urban spaces for all. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆? Treat yourself to a bicycle ride, whether for leisure or commuting, and enjoy the bicycle for what it is: a unique, versatile, and sustainable mode of transport. While out, take note of the challenges facing cyclists in your area and use the day to advocate for more cycling-friendly policies! 🚴♀️🌍 #WorldBicycleDay #UrbanMobility #SustainableMobility #Cycling EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology | Eurostat | European Commission | Dutch Cycling Embassy |

New in JTLU: “Exploring the Prospects and Challenges of Sustainable Urban Mobility: Potential and limits of cycling in Venice” by Cristina Bircu, Federico Cavallaro, Gianfranco Pozzer, and Silvio Nocera of the Università IUAV di Venezia. https://lnkd.in/grDx-EEb The Covid-19 pandemic affected commuting travel behavior, with soft modes emerging as reliable options for short-distance trips. This paper focuses on evaluating the bike-friendliness of Venice, evaluating the potential for using bicycles to reach the historic city center from the mainland. One critical issue identified is the inadequate provision of bike parking, which must be addressed to position bicycles as a competitive and viable alternative for commuting. This paper appears in the special issue: Modeling Choice Behavior of Cyclists & Pedestrians in Urban Areas #Accessibility #BikeCommuting #Venice

The clear and full-throated support for active mobility at the national or supranational level is obviously one of the big changes about life in Europe. The wording is lofty, but now the harder work comes in the implementation of the #EUDeclarationonCycling. A couple of quick thoughts: - In the EU, cyclists remain the only road user group to not to see a decline in fatalities over the past decade. At some point (soon) the gain in users will run headlong into both the perception and the reality of safety for two-wheeled travellers. - It's very clear that cycling in Europe is considered an economic engine, both in the design and manufacture of different types of vehicles, and as tourism generator. This is probably a narrative worth repeating louder in the US. -The declaration speaks to the development of data both on the progress to the various objectives and on the state of cycling itself. Though this was the last point, it's arguably the most important one- reliable, actionable data on cycling is the next frontier in intelligent transportation and governments are really going to struggle to manage what they can't yet reliably measure.

Cycling on rural roads – removing barriers in focus in new SAFER connected project! 🚴 🚴 Have you ever held your breath, focusing intently on keeping your bike within the extremely narrow shoulder, avoiding the ditch, while cars and trucks zoom past you with just meters to spare? You're not alone! Many rural cyclists experience this, and it seems there will be even more in the future. One thing is certain: we need more active travelers to transition to a sustainable transportation system. But how can we accelerate this transition without jeopardizing the lives of these pioneers, who are leading the way towards a sustainable lifestyle? This is the question a new project, led by Katja Kircher, and carried out by If Insurance and Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) together with Ramdoll and POC in SAFER's portfolio aims to answer! At the margins of the Informal Transport European Council, the #EuropeanDeclarationOnCycling was signed by Adina Valean, Karima Delli and Georges Gilkinet. 🚲👏 The institutions are thereby calling for: • more investments in infrastructure 🛣️ • improving road safety 🦺 • and supporting multimodality 🚏 Improvements in cycling infrastructure will also benefit #MicroMobility users as they share the same infrastructure and rely on national, regional and local decision-makers to move away from car-centric spatial planning. Promoting investments in cycling infrastructure and acknowledging the role cycling can play for first/last-mile transport and complementing public transport are aspects that also apply to shared micro-mobility. Marc Naether, Co-Chair of Micro-Mobility for Europe stated: "Today is a historic moment that shows that cycling, walking and shared micro-mobility are increasingly receiving the attention of EU policy-makers, as they offer more sustainable and efficient modes of transport and are alternatives to privately-owned cars in urban areas. Looking ahead, we count on policy-makers to take ambitious action during the upcoming term and to monitor actions taken on national level to make the Declaration a reality." https://lnkd.in/eQbDdB2n
