Last week, I had the privilege of speaking at the Leadership Media Group conference and awards held at Transcorp Hilton Abuja. The event celebrated leaders’ contributions to Nigeria’s growth and development. I was invited to share insights before the presenting of the Young Person of the Year award, an individual who exemplified integrity by returning a large sum of money left behind by passengers. This honesty reiterated the importance of personal values and beliefs in decision-making, especially in challenging circumstances. During my address, I drew parallels between living by fate and living by decision. While fate may seem like the easier path, it's our decisions that truly shape our lives. The keynote speech by Kingsley Moghalu both sobering and thought-provoking, boldly challenging the presidency without reservation. I had the joy of witnessing Mr. Peter Obi receive the Politician of the Year award; reaffirming the value of authenticity in leadership. Authenticity, as evident in Peter Obi's demeanour, is not a coat you put on and off; rather, we intentionally ingrain it into our character. In my brief interaction with him, I found him to be just as genuine in real life as he is on screen. In reflecting on the speeches and awards at the conference, I'm reminded of a powerful quote from 'The Alchemist' which inspired my address: 'The world’s greatest lie is this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate.' This resonates deeply with the theme of the event and reinforces the importance of taking control of our lives through our decisions rather than succumbing to the illusion of fate. #leadershipawards #transcorphilton #leadershipmediagroup #transformationalspeaker

🇳🇬One major factor responsible for our multisectorial challenges in Nigeria is Accidental Leadership. An accidental leader is a person who suddenly finds himself in a leadership position without preparation. 🚴♂️Imagine a person finding themselves by 'chance' in Olympics competition without prior preparations. You can guess the outcome. It will be abysmal at the least. 🎭Unfortunately, this is what pervades the Nigeria system. It is more pronounced in the political space; but it happens everywhere. Here, you have an HOD who doesn't understand what leadership is all about but finds himself as HOD. He begins to terrorize everybody. There, you find a Chief Medical Director who has little or no leadership competence. He runs the hospital aground. In some other place, you see a Permanent Secretary in a government ministry who only rose through the ranks without necessarily growing in leadership competence. The ministry remains comatose. 🇳🇬The sad reality is the average Nigerian does not see themselves as potential leaders even though many of us will end up becoming leaders "accidentally". Join our webinar to: - Understand Nigeria's development challenges and opportunities - Learn strategic leadership skills for holistic impact - Develop a personal leadership action plan Together, let's create a brighter future for Nigeria!

A Roaring Lion Kills No Game The proverb "A roaring lion kills no game" suggests that while it is important to be confident, bold, or assertive, true success is achieved through action. A lion that roars without hunting does not achieve its purpose—catching prey. In business, this proverb teaches that leaders who boast about their achievements, capabilities, or plans without delivering on them are unlikely to achieve success. Real success must be demonstrated through consistent delivery, results, and value. The UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) exemplifies the idea of action over words in our work. The UKGCC does not simply talk about trade services, networking, advocacy, and business opportunities—we actively create platforms, events, and resources for our member companies and other businesses to thrive. This is evident in the testimonials we receive daily from our member companies and we couldn’t have it any other way. “Through your top-level advocacy, engagements, and strategic initiatives, the Chamber has provided the platform and empowered member companies across sectors, including Vivo Energy Ghana, to contribute meaningfully to Ghana's economic growth,” says Jean Michel Arlandis, Managing Director. Read more of our testimonials on our website via: ukgcc.com.gh The UK- Ghana Chamber of Commerce is the leading private sector organisation offering trade and commerce support for UK/Ghana businesses. LEADERSHIP, LEADERS AND LEADING IN NIGERIA On a warm afternoon in Lagos, I found refuge in a bustling café, a place where the city’s noise seemed to blend into a comforting hum. I was waiting for a friend, as usual, and absentmindedly stirred my coffee. My attention was drawn to a nearby table where two men were deep in conversation. “The problem with leadership in Nigeria,” began the taller man, a gray-bearded fellow whose voice carried a quiet authority, “is that we’ve come to see it as a privilege, not a responsibility. Too many of our leaders forget that holding a title is just the beginning.” His companion, a man with a weathered face and a cap pulled low over his brow, sighed. “I agree, but where’s the real leadership? Our roads are crumbling, schools are failing, hospitals are struggling. We have leaders, but no leadership that gets results.” The bearded man nodded thoughtfully. “You’re right. But the issue isn’t just who’s in power—it’s how we all understand leadership. It’s not something that starts at the top; it starts with each of us. Leadership is about making tough decisions, leading by example, and being creative in finding solutions to our problems.” The man in the cap looked skeptical. “But how do we change that? We’ve been stuck in this mess for so long. Can just anyone really make a difference?” The bearded man’s eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope. “Absolutely. Leadership isn’t confined to those with official titles. It’s about the teacher who stays late to help her students, the entrepreneur who creates jobs in a struggling economy, the neighbor who organizes community clean-ups. These are the real leaders—people who take responsibility for their corner of the world.” His friend’s expression softened as he leaned back in his chair, considering this new perspective. “So, what you’re saying is, leadership isn’t just about being in charge, it’s about everyone doing their part, however small?” “Exactly,” the bearded man replied, his voice firm. “When enough of us start leading by example, real change will follow. It’s about creativity, resilience, and the belief that we can all make a difference. The story of leadership in Nigeria isn’t written by those in power alone—it’s written by every Nigerian who dares to step up and take responsibility.” I listened intently, their words resonating deeply within me. As I stood to leave, I couldn’t help but reflect on what I’d heard. The conversation wasn’t just about identifying problems; it was about recognizing the power within each of us to lead in our own ways. Leadership in Nigeria isn’t just about those at the top; it’s about everyday actions, the small but significant steps we take to make our communities better. I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The story of leadership in Nigeria is far from finished—it’s an evolving narrative shaped by the actions of ordinary people who refuse to wait for change but instead choose to be the change #leadership #nigeria #story

Nigeria @64: A Call for Servant Leadership As Nigeria celebrates 64 years of independence, the need for servant leadership has never been more critical. This leadership style prioritizes the needs of the people, fostering a culture of service, empathy, and community. The Urgent Need for Servant Leadership Nigeria urgently requires leaders who will focus on the well-being and development of its citizens. A servant leader inspires trust, drives social and economic reforms, and creates a more inclusive and equitable society. Unfortunately, systemic issues persist, with some leaders failing to uphold the principles of servant leadership. Instead, they strip away the dignity of the people and lack the ethos of true leadership. A servant leader is transparent, sincere, and people-centric, committed to building a nation where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. The Irony of Leadership in Nigeria Ironically, we live in a nation where some leaders, who are emotionally unstable and possess low self-esteem, believe that leadership is about inflicting pain on others. These broken individuals with negative self-identity who live riotous lives, through state or organizational capture, preside over the affairs of the well-intentioned. A Call for True Leadership As we mark this 64th anniversary, I call for true, selfless leadership. Leadership that acknowledges life as an opportunity for service, understanding that what goes around comes around. Leadership that truly values people's lives, regardless of class or status. A Call to Action for All Nigerians I urge all of us to see life as a privilege and strive to do good at all times, as we will all give an account of our stewardship someday, consciously or otherwise. To every Nigerian, if you have done and are still doing well, rejoice, for you are a worthy citizen. But if you have done and are still doing wrong, use this day to reflect, repent, and embrace the gift of life and service to humanity. Love truly and serve genuinely! Happy 64th Independence Day, Nigeria! #Nigeria@64
