🚨 New IIGCC Paper Alert — Completing the Picture: Assessing Utilities' Natural Gas Targets I'm excited to share our paper proposing a methodology to assess natural gas emission targets of energy utilities. This fills a critical gap by complementing existing frameworks that primarily address utilities' emissions from electricity generation. Developed by Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) with input from lead investors in the Climate Action 100+ Utilities Working Group, this methodology aims to support investor engagement and transition risk assessments in the utilities sector. 📊 What’s Inside: - Explanation of how a suitable pathway can be constructed from scenario data and how utilities' sold gas targets could be assessed using the absolute emissions contraction approach. - An application of the methodology to 11 European Climate Action 100+ energy utilities, with anonymized alignment results. - Analysis of challenges, including base-year sensitivity and the use of regional vs. global benchmarks. IIGCC members can access the full report (link in comments). We welcome any additional feedback on the methodology by 23 January 2025. Your insights will help us strengthen this tool, ensuring it’s robust and effective for utility sector engagement. Many thanks to Dan Gardiner, Ashley Thomas, Xander Urbach, Tess Bremer, Will Farrell, Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) and others for their inputs in developing the paper! #NetZero #InvestorEngagement #Utilities #EnergyTransition #ClimateAction #NaturalGas
This innovative guidance from IIGCC is a first attempt at understanding alignment pathways for emissions from gas sales. Please provide feedback and take your use from it, I know we will!
