Thank you for following my Ramadhan series on LinkedIn. I’m now announcing a slight shift as we enter the last 10 days (with a short video and a long post). I’ve posted about Islam throughout Ramadhan to increase cultural understanding. I posted about Ramadhan in Malaysia, iftar in Turkey, taraweeh in Times Square, du’a in Mecca, and a variety of recitations of the Qur’an. I want to extend a hand of friendship, and offer a window into Islam and Muslims at a time of much misunderstanding. The last 10 days of Ramadhan are a time to dig deeper and go further spiritually, so now I’ll be posting content that is intellectually more challenging, more conceptual, and more profound to reflect this. This is based on the practice of reflecting on the Qur’an (tadabbur) mentioned in Qur’an 38:29: كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَـٰرَكٌۭ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ Let me break down the verse: kitābun - (This is) a Book [i.e. The Noble Qur’an] anzal nāhu - We have revealed it ilayka - to you, mubārakun - blessed, liyad dab-barū [i.e. where the word ‘tadabbur’ comes from] - that they may ponder/reflect āyātihi - (over) its Verses wa liya ta dhak-kara ulū l-albāb - and those of understanding may be reminded/take heed My request is that you engage with this deeper content for a few days just as you may have with the content before. I am not preaching. This is simply an opportunity to highlight what reflection and pondering means to a quarter of the world during a truly special time of the year. If you are intellectually curious, even if you are outside the faith, even if you are irreligious, I hope to spark some thoughts, some comparison, some insights, and I hope it leads to discussions that help bring communities closer together. We begin with sabr or how to be patient, steadfast and to persevere. The video by Nouman Ali Khan explains it is exemplified by the verse (Qur’an 2:156): إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ “Without doubt, we belong to Allah and, without doubt, to Him we are returning” In summary, in under 7 minutes, the video highlights two things. The first is a motivation and how the immediate reward for Muslims is to be congratulated personally by the Rasool (Messenger) of Allah himself, Muhammad (SAW). Second and crucially it is a shift in perspective. It helps us see we aren’t owners so we aren’t entitled. It helps us build gratitude, and it helps us be steadfast at the stroke of calamity. The word Sabr itself adds a shade of meaning. It comes from the Arabic root word to refrain or stop. If we stop or pause at a moment of bad news or crisis to compose ourselves, collect our thoughts, and decide to accept the situation to be patient, we can find sabr. Belief in Islam is really about 2 things; sabr (patience) and shukr (gratitude), and we believe no one can be given a better or more abundant gift. https://lnkd.in/e2EkfZ_z
