Did you know that the ending sound on the words, “tested,” “checked,” and “administered” are all pronounced differently? 🤯 In English, the -ed ending is used to talk about things that happened in the past and is put on the end of regular verbs. However, there are three different ending sounds that can be made with this ending. I’ve noticed that many of my clients pronounce the -ed ending as an extra syllable on any word they see it on. (It is especially common for Spanish and Portuguese speakers, but other languages as well.) Know that if you are guilty of doing this, you are not alone, but this is something that can be easily fixed with practice. Check out today’s carousel on what the ending sounds are and the rules for when we use each one. Don’t forget to share this with a colleague that needs help with this concept. ______________________________________- Hi, I’m Amanda. 👋 I help international doctors and surgeons develop more confidence and clarity when speaking with their patients and colleagues in English, which enhances relationships that can lead to bigger career opportunities. 📨 DM me to book a free chat if you’d like to learn more. #healthcareprofessionals #medicalprofessionals #doctorlife

⭐ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬' 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭?⭐ ➡️ But do you speak their language?! ⬅️ ⚕️They will not usually be using difficult or 'text book' medical terms. ⚕️ Overcomplex terms can add to the anxiety and stress that a patient may already be feeling. 🔵 Colloquial language is huge amongst patients and their families. This means phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions and informal language. 🔵 Help them feel at ease by using the language they understand, even more importantly, understanding them when they speak to you. ⚠️ When the patient is already suffering, they do not want to feel mis-understood when speaking. ⚠️They will use many phrasal verbs and colloquialisms that you may not be able to guess if you hear them for the first time in a dialogue with them. Do you know these Phrasal verbs and Idioms I have included below? What other Medical phrasal verbs and Idioms do you know? Let me know below, there are so many! Back in August, together with a medical student, we created pictograms for an Iranian patient. We designed visual tools combining Farsi script and phonetic Dutch pronunciation to help bridge the communication gap. It was a simple idea, but it had a profound impact. What stood out most for me was how much joy this project brought to the medical student. She took ownership of the task, drawing everything beautifully in just a few hours. It was a moment of connection, care, and creativity—a reminder that small gestures can make a big difference. Today, as I reflect on that experience, I can’t help but think about the role of creativity and authenticity in the world we live in. In a fast-paced healthcare system, where consultations are often limited to 10 minutes, it’s easy to lose sight of the human story behind the diagnosis. Yet, creativity gives us a way to reconnect with that story. It helps us reflect, empathize, and find meaning in what we do. I believe there is space—and a need—for creativity in medicine. Not just to treat diseases, but to honor the human experience, build connections, and bring authenticity to our work. Thanks Ilse Ruiter and fariba samadi #healthcare #creativity #humanitiesinmedicine #authenticity #carewithlove

It’s easy to just use the language you know, but our medical terms are quite literally Greek and Latin. We also have an obligation to ensure we translate what we are saying into easy to understand language. All physicians are translators. #HealthcareCommunication #PatientCare #MedicalJargonSimplified #PhysiciansAsTranslators #ClearCommunication #PatientUnderstanding #MedicalLiteracy #HealthcareEducation #DemystifyingMedicine #OncologySimplified
