🩺 A Vital 10-Year Study: Rotator Cuff Tear Management 💪 A landmark prospective, multicenter cohort study reveals important insights into shoulder injury treatment. PT as the most underrated clinical modality in MSK care. Key Findings: Physical therapy successfully treated over 70% of patients Patient treatment outcomes remained stable for a decade Recovery predictions evolve with time and individual factors Identified predictors of surgical intervention: Early surgery (within 6 months): Low patient expectations of physical therapy Later surgery (6-10 years): Activity level and Workers' Compensation status Most Importantly, Physical therapy patients: ✅ Maintained consistent performance outcomes ✅ Rarely required reverse shoulder arthroplasty ✅ Demonstrated durable treatment effectiveness This study, published in a top orthopedic surgery journal, JBJS, solidifies our understanding of non-operative vs. operative rotator cuff tear care. #MSK #PT #MedicalResearch #OrthopedicSurgery #PhysicalTherapy #PatientCare #MedicalInnovation

Low patient expectations regarding efficacy of PT for RTC rehab were found to be a predictor of early surgery. In patients that delay surgery AND have symptomatic full thickness tears, >70% had successful outcomes with PT and non-op management. Take home message here - let's all work to build patient confidence in non-operative management options. Positively framing an intervention can work wonders for patients. We can always perform surgery at any time, but can't reverse it once it's done! Surgery can be costly for the patient and healthcare system, and also results in missed time at work putting further strain on the patient and our economy. American medicine needs to shift focus back to conservative management and quality care. Be the change you wish to see in the world.

New Publication in JEO Journal! Solving 3D Problems Requires a 3D Perspective! To ensure that the outcomes of orthopedic surgery align with preoperative plans, it is essential to examine the intervened bone in 3D—something conventional 2D imaging cannot accomplish. This motivation drove our recent study, where we used computer-assisted methods to assess the post-intervention effects on a growing femur. By employing a surface registration approach to align the 3D femur models at two distinct time points—preoperative and 12 weeks postoperative—we accurately captured the rotational changes resulting from the surgical intervention and subsequent growth. This study might have implications for improving postoperative evaluations, particularly for experimental studies focused on correcting rotational deformities in the growing femur. 🚨 Cartiva in Hallux Rigidus Treatment! 🚨 After 5 years of dedicated research and hands-on experience, we've discovered key insights into the effectiveness of revision surgeries following failed synthetic cartilage implant (SCI) resurfacing for Hallux Rigidus. 💥 🔍 Key Findings: - 8.2% Revision Rate: Out of 219 SCI resurfacing procedures, 23 required revisions. - Comparison: MTPJ arthrodesis showed greater pain relief compared to SCI replacement. 🦶 - Patient Profile: Most patients were female, with a mean age of 52.8 years and a BMI of 29.5. 📉 Clinical Impact: Our results suggest that while SCI resurfacing is a promising option, MTPJ arthrodesis may offer superior long-term pain relief for those needing revision surgery. 🌟 ** My Exciting New Manuscript on Knee Surgery Outcomes!** 🌟 I am thrilled to share my latest manuscript findings on the impact of preoperative vagal activity on recovery after total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. 🔍 **Key Findings:** - Pre-surgery heart-rate variability (HRV) can predict postoperative inflammation and recovery time. - Patients with higher HRV levels experienced quicker recovery and lower inflammation levels, as indicated by C-reactive protein (CRP). - Personalized interventions, such as HRV biofeedback, could enhance surgical outcomes by improving vagal tone before surgery. 🔬 **Why It Matters:** This research highlights the potential for using HRV as a marker for personalized surgical preparation. By understanding a patient's HRV, we can develop tailored interventions to improve recovery and reduce complications. 👩⚕️ **Future Directions:** The study opens up exciting possibilities for personalized medicine, where targeted interventions could enhance recovery and patient satisfaction. Check out my full study for more insights into how we're advancing the field of orthopedic surgery! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dRb6YdfB #MedicalResearch #OrthopedicSurgery #HeartRateVariability #PersonalizedMedicine #KneeReplacement
