Seasonal Floral Displays by Rick Longnecker There are certain parts of your landscape that you love to see come back every year. On the other hand, remember that variety is the spice of life. Annual floral displays allow you to introduce varied color schemes from year to year. Planning your floral display with annuals is a good landscape investment because they’re versatile, colorful, fast-growing and relatively inexpensive. These dependable single-season flowers hit the ground running and provide a spectacular and easy show all season long. The choices in size, color and growth habit are vast. Some work well as edging plants. Others are best used in planters or window boxes. Because annuals live only one season and have no permanent roots from which to grow the next year, they perpetuate their kind through heavy seed production. To produce lots of seeds, they must produce many flowers. With the right planning, good soil, plenty of water and room to flourish, an annual flower display allows you to give your property a fresh explosion of color that changes every year. #seasonalflowers #floraldisplays #colorfulflowers #flowergarden #annuals #annualflowers #pnwflowergarden

It's amazing how flowers seem to understand their purpose, whether they're in a carefully tended garden or just growing naturally in a forest. In the garden, people plant and care for them, ensuring they have just the right amount of water, sunlight, and nutrients. They thrive in this controlled environment, growing in neat rows, and adding beauty and fragrance to the space. But then there are those wildflowers in the forest or along the roadside. They don't get any special treatment. They just grow wherever their seeds land, in places where the soil might not be the best and the weather can be unpredictable. Despite this, they still bloom, often spreading across wide areas, painting the landscape with their vibrant colors. Both garden flowers and wildflowers have their own beauty and charm. Garden flowers are like well-kept secrets, carefully nurtured and appreciated up close. Wildflowers are like surprises, popping up unexpectedly and reminding us that nature has its own way of creating beauty. What's interesting is that they both play a role in their environments. Garden flowers can brighten up our homes and offer a peaceful space to relax. Wildflowers, on the other hand, support ecosystems by providing food for pollinators like bees and butterflies, and they can help prevent soil erosion. So, whether a flower grows in a garden or in the wild forest, it does its job. It brings beauty into the world, supports life, and reminds us that there's something special about letting things grow in their own way. #arte #artdeco #abstactart #abstractpainting #abstractflower #acrylicinkart #nature #growth #positivevibes #beauty #happinessisachoice #growthmindset #mindsetiseverything #life #wildflowers #garden #gratitude

Autumn is my favourite season, even if it’s a bit bittersweet as the landscape begins to transform with warm and rich colours. Many trees and shrubs start to show their Autumn hues, with leaves turning shades of gold, orange, red, and purple. Acers, Dogwoods, and Rhus Typhina are particularly striking. With late-blooming perennials hitting their peak too, adding vibrant splashes of colour to the garden when Summer blooms have long faded. Ornamental Grasses like Panicum and Calamagrostis produce plumes and seed heads that catch the light beautifully, adding texture to the garden. Many shrubs, such as holly, Pryracantha, Crabapples and Viburnums, begin to display colourful berries, which can attract birds to the garden. The angle of the sun is lower, casting a warm, golden light that enhances the colours of the garden. Early mornings might bring a touch of frost or dew, adding sparkle to leaves and grasses. Autumn is a busy time for wildlife too as animals prepare for winter, you might see squirrels gathering fruits, birds feasting on berries, or bees buzzing around on late-blooming flowers. This time of year, the garden is a dynamic and evolving scene, full of life and colour, with each day bringing subtle changes. I love plants with big leaves. Nothing is more dramatic than enormous tropical foliage. One of the species we grow that always makes people stop and stare is Philodendron warszewiczii (war-zeh-wick-zee-eye), an amazing species, with incredibly lacy, divided leaves. One of the lesser-known Philodendrons, its individual leaves can reach 3-4' long and are held out from the trunk on long petioles. The trunk itself is amazingly thick, with a 6-10” diameter or even more in its native habitat. Being a terrestrial variety, it will ramble along the ground, but given the chance it will climb up a tree or rock. (They have climbed to the roof of our shade house on multiple poles!) As the plant ages, the emerging foliage becomes increasingly lacy, growing in beauty as it increases in size. Highly tropical, it will often drop most of its leaves during dry periods, regrowing them when the season is right. It does best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil and filtered light. Use it in the tropical landscape, in containers, or in brightly lit interiors. I love this plant for the texture and the ultimate size of it, and in mass it is just incredible. Ready now in 7-gallon pots. www.gardenind.com Instagram @mr_plant_man #plants #flowers #garden #landscape #nursery #tropical #landscapedesign #gardenlife #florida #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantsofinstagram #botanical #tropicalplants #monsteramonday #houseplants #houseplantsofinstagram #foliage #aroids #aroidaddicts #philodendron #philodendronfriday #Philodendronwarszewiczii #nosmallplantshere #iloveplants

I love flowers, they can lift the soul and bring a space to life. They can help to tell stories without words. They can evoke feelings and emotions through the screen in film & photo and also through their scent during events. As a conservator, I also know that not all flowers are equal in terms of the kind of hazard they may become and risk they may post in a heritage interior. This is why florists working in heritage interiors are often given very specific guidance on flora and foliage to be used during filming and events. There may be restrictions on how fresh flowers are kept hydrated and which surfaces foliage may touch or how stable containers must be. The rules may differ by season because of related insect pest risks. Some specific flowers are problematic in their own right. We all know about the perils of lily pollen, especially when it gets wet ( 😱 ) but did you know that peonies are beautiful time-bombs? This week's Top Tip Tuesday explains. Peonies have a tendency to de-petal completely and unexpectedly, shedding all of their petals onto the nearest surface. They also have quite fleshy petals and particularly the darker varieties will stain fragile surfaces if they are squished on them.

The Art and Science of Floristry 🌿 Working with flowers is not just about arranging them beautifully; it's about understanding the intricate balance between floristic techniques and the surrounding environment. As florists, we often hear clients say, "These flowers last longer back home." This is often due to differences in water quality, climate, and care practices. When recommending flowers for the home, it's crucial to consider where the vase will be placed. Will it be in direct sunlight or near an air conditioner? Will it be exposed to drafts from an open door? Flowers are incredibly sensitive, and even small environmental factors can significantly impact their longevity. Several factors affect the lifespan of flowers, including: - **Environmental Conditions**: Sunlight, temperature, humidity, and airflow can all influence how long flowers last. - **Transportation and Storage**: Proper handling and storage are essential to maintain the freshness of flowers before they reach the client. - **Farm Practices**: Issues at the farm level can affect the health and longevity of flowers. Our main goal as florists is to ensure that our arrangements thrive in our clients' homes, encouraging them to return for more. It's not just about making a sale today; it's about building lasting relationships with happy clients who appreciate our dedication to quality and service. Let's continue to delight our clients with beautiful flowers that brighten their spaces and last as long as possible! 🌺 #Floristry #CustomerService #FloralDesign #ClientSatisfaction #Flowers
