Congratulations to Distinguished Laureate Professor Nicholas J. Talley, AC, MD, PhD and his team from the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health, who have been awarded $3m by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to continue their mission to find causes of chronic unexplained gut diseases, unlock new therapies and ultimately cure disease. With more than one-third of Australians affected by disorders of the gut-brain interaction, including irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia, learning and understanding more about the interconnectedness of the digestive and central nervous systems is critical in developing better diagnostic and treatments to improve quality of life for patients. Since 2019 the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health has brought together world-leading researchers from universities, hospitals, and research institutions in Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. This new funding will support the Centre over the next five years to generate new knowledge to accelerate the translation of their research. Find out more https://okt.to/huJH9s

🎥 Medical Innovations: From Skepticism to Breakthroughs 🌟 For years, integrative medicine has faced pushback, much like the revolutionary medical pioneers of the past. Yet history proves that groundbreaking ideas often start as radical and eventually become foundational. 🩺 Did You Know? - Louis Pasteur was mocked for his germ theory. - Barry Marshall drank bacteria to prove it caused ulcers. - Gut health and its role in diseases like Parkinson's? Once dismissed, now science-backed. I ntegrative medicine’s holistic focus on treating chronic conditions—like addressing the gut-brain connection in Parkinson’s—is finally being validated. Studies in 2024 have cemented the link between gut health and neurodegenerative diseases, a concept integrative practitioners have championed for years. 💡 The Takeaway What’s unconventional today may be tomorrow’s breakthrough. 🎉 Exciting Canadian Research Alert! 🇨🇦🔬 🔍 Key findings: Risk of chromosomal anomalies increases with nuchal translucency measurements. Pregnancies with measurements <2.0mm had the lowest risk. Even measurements <3.5mm showed increased risk, challenging current screening practices. 🔬 This population-based cohort study, led by Canadian researchers, included data from over 400,000 pregnancies in Ontario, providing robust evidence for reevaluating prenatal screening thresholds. 🌟 Implications: Could lead to reexamination of current screening practices. Highlights the importance of high-quality prenatal screening programs. Opens avenues for further research and policy adjustments. Let's celebrate Canadian excellence in medical research! 🎉👏 #CanadianResearch #PrenatalScreening #ChromosomalAnomalies #ScienceInCanada #HealthcareInnovation https://lnkd.in/grYy-s2S

New Original Research article in RRH: Clinical outcomes in patients hospitalised with dysmagnesemia in the Northern Territory of Australia: a retrospective, longitudinal data-linkage study by Juhaina Al-Maqbali, Abdullah Al Alawi, Asanga Abeyaratne, Sandawana Majoni and Henrik Falhammar. https://lnkd.in/gwZH47GB Magnesium is required for almost all body system functions, including cardiovascular, neurological, endocrine, musculoskeletal and immune systems. Dysmagnesemia, or disorder in serum magnesium levels (hypermagnesemia or hypomagnesemia), is associated with poor health outcomes in hospitalised patients, including the need for longer hospital stays and increased risk of mortality. This register-based study assessed the prevalence of dysmagnesemia and associated health outcomes among hospitalised patients in the Northern Territory, Australia. #ruralhealth #magnesium #firstnations #indigenous #hospitalisation Healthengine Charles Darwin University Healthdirect Australia Sultan Qaboos University NT Health Asanga Abeyaratne Sandawana William Majoni

Functional Medicine: A Holistic Approach to Health Functional Medicine offers a refreshing perspective on healthcare. Rather than just treating symptoms, it seeks to identify and address the root causes of chronic disease. Functional Medicine practitioners take time to understand each patient's unique genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term well-being. They leverage the latest research in nutritional science, genomics, and systems biology to develop personalized treatment plans. The goal is to support the natural healing mechanisms of the body and restore proper function. This is done through a combination of science-based natural therapies, nutritional counseling, stress management techniques, detoxification programs, and lifestyle changes. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centric approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. It empowers patients to take an active role in their own health. The rise of chronic disorders like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, and autoimmune disorders demands a new kind of medicine. Functional Medicine represents the future of healthcare. It offers a powerful model for prevention, treatment, and reversal of complex, chronic disease. To learn more about this integrated, science-based approach to medicine, follow the Institute for Functional Medicine. #FunctionalMedicine #RootCauseMedicine #PersonalizedMedicine
