In Italy as in Singapore, Artificial Intelligence is taking on an increasingly important role in every aspect of social and economic life. #AI is indeed one of the 7 areas of collaboration under the #ExecutiveProgram in S&T between Italy and Singapore. Recently, the Italian government founded the AI for Industry Institute (#AI4I) to perform transformative application-oriented research in Artificial Intelligence, contributing to innovation, industrial transformation, and economic growth. With a firm institutional commitment and a long-term national funding, AI4I, based in #Turin, aims to grow fast as the leading national AI Center, shaping the research and development AI agenda in Italy and in Europe. To this purpose, AI4I will build on an on-premise #HPC cluster and on the #LeonardoHPC system (CINECA). Moreover, AI4I will leverage a key strategic partnership with the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and a unique scientific, industrial and financial ecosystem. AI4I aims to attract and empower a new generation of AI leaders in research and innovation, also thanks to competitive and incentive-based compensation schemes. According to recent surveys, Canadians are increasingly skeptical about the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technologies. 🔎    We hear you.      As a leading supporter of #responsible #AI for development, we know the road we are on is paved with both promise and peril. We also believe that research, specifically evidence from the Global South, can help guide us to a world where responsible AI systems are the norm: safe, inclusive, rights-based and sustainable.     🚀 Last week saw the launch of the Global Index on Responsible AI, the largest global data collection on responsible AI to date and the first survey to examine AI policy development worldwide through a human-rights lens. This IDRC-supported tool features country rankings so that national governments can use it to inform where attention needs to be paid to ensure responsible AI systems are developed.     The Global Index On Responsible AI is evidence of what many experts have been alluding to for months: that most people are unprotected from the risks of AI. It also says that international cooperation and engaging universities and civil society are key to advancing responsible AI.     Which brings us to the second 📣 big announcement 📣 out of IDRC’s AI portfolio this past week.     At the G7 Summit in Italy, Canada and the UK announced IDRC’s flagship AI for Development (AI4D) initiative is expanding to Indo-Asia. Less than four years after it started in Africa, AI4D has now catalyzed more than CAD100M in investments for a CAD146 million+ portfolio of work being done to drive research-powered responsible AI development and innovations in the South.      AI4D is moving forward responsible AI policy research, innovation and scaling, and capacity strengthening.  IDRC is proud to be building a shared vision for responsible AI along with Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, academic and private sector partners in the Global North, and most importantly, AI researchers and innovators in low- and middle-income countries. Our common purpose is to ensure AI’s benefits leave no one behind.      Canada’s AI leadership and significant AI investments offer tremendous value to the global community.
