Happy International’s Men Day. On 19/11, we celebrate globally the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities. Movember is also the month dedicated to raising funds and awareness for distinctive men’s health issues. I love this year’s theme, "Men's health champions," as it emphasizes improving men's overall well-being and promoting healthy lifestyles. Stigmas out; empathy in. Few facts: 1. Men have a 3x higher suicide rate 2. Men on average die 4-5 years younger 3. 1/3 of men have suffered domestic violence 4. Men are 2x more likely to suffer lung cancer 5. Men are 2x more likely to suffer heart disease Deep heartfelt appreciation to all those who make IMD happen around the globe. It is only when we all, men and women, lead by example that we will create a fair and safe society that allows everyone the opportunity to prosper and be our true and whole selves. 💙💜💙💜💙💜💙💜

When we say "fun, age-appropriate educational tools for primary schools to teach kids about organ donation and health education," this is what we mean… This is the 8-minute film recently shared on the BBC One Show. A few peaks into his galaxy for you: - When asked about a "typical" work day, Ben shared, I love this question because it makes me realize that “typical” is not part of my work vocabulary. Even after 8 years with MEAction every day feels like a new opportunity to act, to learn, to connect. If there is anything typical or expected about my work I guess it would be the practice of embracing change." - Favorite part of his job? "MEAction is an organization built on the belief in our collective people-power to make a difference in the world. So my favorite part of the job is when I’m able to facilitate something that makes people tangibly aware of their collective power after having so many experiences of invisibility and marginalization -What is he looking forward to? " I am genuinely excited about my work in the next year, especially the pilot program we’ll be launching that is funded by the Minnesota Department of Health Long COVID Program. We’re currently designing some innovative approaches to help Minnesotan program participants with ME, Long COVID and related conditions, especially those in underserved communities, to access ongoing support for activities of daily living. I’m excited both for the tangible help this will provide to individuals in the program, but also how we can use this pilot to pull back the curtain on what it really takes to support people with ME and have robust data we can use for our advocacy nationally." ❓❓HOW can we solve the complex mess we are in? I WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe that community is at the heart of our solution to everything. Humans evolved in communities like fish evolved in water, so we need community to breathe. What’s more, society needs communities to operate - without connection, trust and solidarity, we can’t achieve equality, cohesion or democracy.  ❓❓So HOW can we restore community in societies - like ours - where it has been lost? (and, let’s be honest, intentionally broken down by the powers that be) I WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe the long-term solution lies in [EQUITABLY] supporting mothers and parents to build the communities of support they need to thrive as parents (which is obviously good for their kids too). It takes a village to raise a child, right? By gathering the "village" they need to thrive and raise their child, parents can rebuild community for the next generation. ❓❓But HOW do we do that? The simple solution could be to go back to living in the hunter-gatherer communities in which we spent most of our history as a species living (hehe). But we can’t do that can we? Instead, we need to understand what a ‘good’ village looks like so we can support mothers/parents to build the communities of support they need. There are many different ways a ‘good village’ can look, we need to know the ‘active ingredients’ of a ‘good’ community of support, so that we can find ways to bring those ingredients together in 21st Century Britain.  😇 I am starting a [part-time] PhD at University of Cambridge to find out what these ‘active ingredients’ are - by comparing the social networks of mothers in the UK and contemporary hunter-gatherer mothers.  🛠 The end-product will be a toolkit for grassroots organisations that are building community for [and through] parents, to so they can enhance and validate their existing brilliant work.  🔥 I’ll be looking to get four larger organisations to sponsor the toolkit (4k per year each) - to help fund the research. Today, we honor The Longest Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support, and research. This special event, organized by the Alzheimer’s Association, has a rich history rooted in community and resilience. The Origins The Longest Day was inspired by the summer solstice, the day with the most light. Just as the sun shines longest on this day, we shine a light on the challenges faced by those affected by Alzheimer's disease. The initiative began in 2012, encouraging people to engage in activities they love from sunrise to sunset, symbolizing the endurance and strength needed to fight Alzheimer’s. Evolution Over the Years In its early years, The Longest Day primarily focused on a variety of individual and group activities, from walking and cycling to hosting bake sales and craft fairs. As awareness grew, so did the participation and creativity of the events. Today, The Longest Day has expanded to include virtual events, making it accessible to even more people around the world. From online gaming marathons to virtual dance parties, the ways to participate have evolved, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of the community. Why It Matters Every activity, every hour spent, and every dollar raised brings us closer to a world without Alzheimer's.
