"How many medications did you take today? Nearly 4 in 10 adults over the age of 65 living in the United States are prescribed five or more medications. Polypharmacy, the use of five or more medications, is prevalent among older adults, especially women managing chronic conditions. Although these medications are often important and necessary, they can come with risks like harmful side-effects, drug interactions and adherence challenges. Imagine someone with knee pain is prescribed a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug as a pain reliever, but that causes a subsequent side-effect of high blood pressure that is misinterpreted as a new medical condition; this leads to the prescribing of potentially inappropriate medication to treat the hypertension. When physicians mistake the side-effect of a medication for symptoms of a new medical condition, and prescribe a subsequent drug to treat it, it is known as initiating a “prescribing cascade”... Did you know that 60% of people diagnosed with diabetes will also experience peripheral neuropathy? It primarily impacts people 65 and older. But the condition and some of its early (and often unnoticed) symptoms may be present for years or even decades before that. Fortunately, knowledge is power. Make neuropathy education a priority for diabetic patients at your facility. Not sure where to start? Clinical Counseling on Methylprednisolone! Methylprednisolone, a commonly used corticosteroid, requires patient awareness for safe and effective use. Here are some important points to consider: • Advise patients receiving immunosuppressive doses to avoid live vaccines during therapy. • Educate patients about possible side effects such as skin thinning, delayed wound healing, fluid retention, growth suppression, peptic ulcer disease, muscle weakness, cataracts, mood changes, heart failure, or seizures. • Instruct patients to report any signs of infection immediately. • Prolonged use may cause adrenocortical insufficiency. Symptoms like fatigue, muscle weakness, appetite loss, weight loss, or low blood pressure should not be ignored. • Diabetic patients need to monitor blood sugar levels as hyperglycemia can occur. • Oral formulations should be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. • Sudden discontinuation of methylprednisolone is harmful. Patients must follow tapering instructions strictly. Providing clear and precise counseling is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of patients on methylprednisolone therapy. #counselling #pharmacy #patientcare #pharmd #healthcare
