Workers in Singapore can now ask for four-day work weeks, more work-from-home days and staggered work timings starting from Dec. 1, underscoring the global trend of governments and companies relaxing office arrangements in order to retain talent. In a market of very successful real estate with vacancy at only 7.5%, it's the government pushing its employers to wake up to the realities of HR today, even in Singapore. Companies are no longer able to reject a request on the basis that it runs counter to a firm’s traditions or management simply doesn’t believe in such flexible work styles. This is a very progressive step from one of Asia's leading countries.

I have loved living here as a permanent resident for almost 20 of my 32 years in Asia. I’ve been working in what is now called "hybrid" style for a dozen years because my teammates were from many surrounding countries. In addition to what Francis and others have mentioned below, here are other ways the nation is proactively shaping its future workplace: 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 Singapore anticipates the evolving job market by refining educational curriculums and promoting lifelong learning, aligning future workforce skills with industry needs. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 The government champions the use of AI-enhanced tools to boost productivity and collaboration across traditional and remote workspaces, ensuring adaptability in its workforce. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐈 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 Through its National AI Strategy, Singapore aims for global leadership in AI by 2030, enhancing key sectors. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐈 Singapore sets global standards with its AI governance, focusing on ethical frameworks that guide responsible AI deployment. 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 Initiatives like SkillsFuture and TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) prepare Singaporeans for the digital economy, focusing on essential AI and data skills. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 The Smart Nation Initiative leverages AI to streamline public services, promoting widespread efficiency and enhancing the quality of life. 𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 The government’s investment in AI research and its encouragement of public-private partnerships catalyze continuous innovation and maintain Singapore’s competitive edge. Francis’ post here about support for a 4 day workweek underscores the latest in an array of forward thinking initiatives by this powerhouse of a small but highly capable nation. #FutureOfWork #Singapore #HybridWork #Workplace #WorkplaceDesign #ProjectLeadership

Temporary work has become a key component of the modern job market, especially in dynamic sectors where the demand for workers can fluctuate seasonally or by project. For employers, #flexible #employment is a way to adjust the number of workers to current operational needs, helping them avoid costs associated with permanent employment when full-time work isn’t necessary. Many industries, such as logistics, manufacturing, and retail, rely on this form of work to respond quickly to changes in demand and maintain operational #efficiency. 📈 For workers, #temporaryjobs can be an attractive way to gain professional experience and explore different sectors. This option is especially popular among young people just entering the job market, as it allows them to acquire essential skills and get familiar with various roles before committing to a long-term career path. Temporary work also offers flexibility, which can appeal to those balancing work with studies or other commitments. ⚖️ One of the challenges associated with temporary work is its lack of stability, which can be a concern for those seeking long-term employment. However, the growth of this work model shows that the job market is adapting to the changing needs and expectations of workers, as well as to employers' requirements. In response, temporary work agencies are increasingly offering support to both employees and employers, helping to match suitable jobs with appropriate work conditions. ✅ The flexibility of temporary work makes it an ideal solution for companies looking for quick and efficient ways to adapt to market changes. Temporary employment continues to gain popularity and its importance grows alongside the need for mobility and flexibility in the modern job market. 👌

This was one of the most-read stories from Work Shift this week. I've written before about how the future of work is playing out in different ways in different parts of the world -- the right to disconnect, four-day workweeks, pay transparency, etc. This is a great example. Flex-place, flex-time, flex-load -- which of these does your organization support? What means the most to employees? And while these new guidelines in Singapore aren't legally enforceable, they're certainly worth keeping an eye on. If anyone has insights on how this is playing out in Singapore, please get in touch. #flexwork #flextime #jobsharing #jobs #careers #futureofwork #remotework #righttodisconnect #singapore #asia #FWA #laws #policy #governments

I find it really interesting how quick CEO’s will let people work remotely when it’s part of a disaster contingency plan to keep the doors open. ⚠️💻 But when the skies are blue and the sun is shining they want you to commute to an office to do the same work. This desire to gain control is sad, embarrassing and comical all at the same time 😢🤭 #RemoteWork #Disaster #Leadership #HybridWork #DisasterContingency

I personally love being able to work remotely and flexibly. It allows me to more focus my energy and productive. But I realise this is not the case for everyone. And that's why I found it quite forward thinking and important the recent Flexible Work Arrangements released by the TAFEP Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices which specifies that by 1 December all employers in Singapore are obligated to fairly assess formal requests made by employees for flexible work arrangements. I think what's amazing is that our certified Top Employers in Singapore are well setup and leading the way when it comes to many of the practices to facilitate an easy adoption of flexible work arrangements #TopEmployersSingapore

This week marks #NationalWorkLifeWeek, a time to highlight the importance of work-life balance. Our 2024 Salary Survey confirms that candidates place a lot of value on work-life balance and flexibility when looking for new roles. While 60% of our respondents said they prefer flexible/hybrid working patterns, our survey also showed a trend of employers prioritising in-office time to working from home....
