Literacy is the foundation for learning and should be taught as skills for problem solving, communication, and knowledge building. So true. I will always be an advocate for PBL. Students want relevance and impact in their learning. Most kids can’t believe how fast time progresses in my class. They are engaged in what they are learning and doing—it has meaning and impact in their lives and their communities. Autonomy, choice, voice, community impact, and being able to marry that with content brings magic 🪄 to the classroom. Every age. Every stage. PBL is the way to flexible learning styles for all learners. #NVSTOY24

Once upon a time, there was Traditional Mathematics; the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) transformed it to Reformed Mathematics, underscored by a six - element principle: teaching, learning, assessment, equity, curriculum and technology. Here we are; I say we can have more to make the teaching, learning and assessment tripod of mathematics more formidable in effectiveness and aura. I am advocating for #expressivemathematics

This is a great article from the brilliant Dr Jo Boaler on the importance of asking mathematics teachers to engage in mathematics and the structures that we know lead to student success. https://lnkd.in/eW54Tpqg This is precisely what our content academies in Math and ELA are based upon at Carnegie Learning and what Patterns was built from so teachers could engage in a virtual setting when it is most realistic for their schedules. This is very close to the need conversations I had separately last week with Kimberly Odom and James Russo, Ed.D. and what we are partnering with Green River Regional Educational Cooperative alongside the Kentucky Department of Education to bring to teachers in Kentucky as part of their Numeracy pilot. Also pumped to see the impact of the academies kicking off this month Columbus City Schools - Ohio with Kelly Rivers leadership: "In the professional development described in the 2 studies reported in this paper, teachers were given time to learn – time that is manageable for all school districts – 5 days in the summer and 8 days a year. They engaged in mathematics themselves in the ways that students need to engage mathematically and they were treated as professionals. The time the teachers received to learn translated into student achievement. In the US policy makers should trust in the teaching force and the research evidence that has been collected over decades on high quality mathematics teaching and learning. When we erase the mathematical myths about who can learn mathematics (Boaler, 2015) and we invest in teacher learning time, students learn mathematics to high levels."

Urgent action is needed to address the systemic shortage of skilled mathematics teachers.   Addressing this critical issue is a new study, “Relieving Out of Field Teaching in Australian Secondary Mathematics: Analysis of out-of-field secondary mathematics teacher upskilling initiatives in Australia”, authored by Michelle Barker, Merrilyn Goos and Mary Coupland. Proudly endorsing the report, Institute CEO Elayne Grace says, “Equipping our teachers with strong mathematics skills and the best methods to teach mathematics must be a priority, as this is key to optimal student learning. Upskilling out-of-field teachers can enhance both teacher job satisfaction and student learning outcomes.”   “Mathematics skills are not only the cornerstone of the actuarial profession, but they are also essential for navigating life. Maths proficiency is vital for Australia’s productivity, including innovation, economic competitiveness and national security. Upskilling qualified teachers would enable more students – such as those in rural and regional areas and from disadvantaged schools – to access better quality maths education, rather than having to wait for specialist mathematics teachers to graduate.”   The Institute supports policy reform in several domains to encourage more students to study mathematics, and at higher levels.
