I’ve uploaded Parts Twelve, Thirteen, and Fourteen of Pilgrims, Puritans, and Heretics 1620-1700. These parts conclude our ancestors’ 17th century experiences in the New World. They touch on subjects as varied as King Philip’s War, The arrival of the Richardsons in Pennsylvania, the mad Tuttles of New Haven, and the Witch Hysteria in Salem. As a reminder, I use both the first person to express the fictionalized voices of the protagonists, and the third person to communicate what historians currently know about the events that transpired. The theme that accompanied the 1624 landing of New York's first settlers on Governors Island in New York Harbor (1) recognizes the Dutch Republic’s DNA introduced as New Netherland’s juridical and cultural construct (i.e., the New York Tri-State’s DNA) at its 1624 birth (e.g., its legal philosophy of Religious Tolerance, Freedom of Conscience and no persecution); and (2) recognizes these birth traits as the New York Tri-State’s birthright which continues to contribute to New York’s sociopolitical landscape. Namely, (3) Governors Island’s legacy requires [New York and Dutch] political affirmation and recognition as New York’s cultural wellspring and spirit of place.

Juneteenth marks the end of chattel slavery in the United States in 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The delayed realization of emancipation for so many is a painful reminder of how the promise of freedom has too often been denied for Black Americans throughout our nation's history.
